Katich usurps Jaques in race for first test.
We've decided to go with Simon Katich as opener with the fact that he can bowl his gentle left-armers not going astray. Disappointing for Jaques but it's now the fifth go Katich gets at test cricket in a stuttering career.

Not one single report has suggested that Katich's chinamen are a factor in his selection over Jaques.
He's hardly bowled at all in the last 2 years.

Good to have you back horrie. Did DFAT stop you stepping on the plane or are you yet to go?

I would contest that Henry, read below, from today's Australian.
Mitchell Johnson (3-62) was the pick of Australia's bowlers yesterday. Spin, which was always going to be Australia's great weakness following the recent retirements of Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill, played a part in Katich's surprise inclusion yesterday.
Ponting hinted as much at the start of the tour regarding Katich's occasional left-arm wrist spinners.
"Katto's in the squad and might be able to bowl us a few handy spinners at times," Ponting told The Australian.

Phurt. Any quote from Ponting doesn't count.

Well given that he's only the captain I tend to agree. Katich's poor slip-fielding was costly at times in the Windies so you'd have undertake a cost-benefit analysis to see if anything positive derived from his bowling isn't offset by what he drops in the field.

in essence the team cannot afford both hatti and fleas in the same squad...both are inept - tuffers level - fieldsman....fleas may get the odd wicket by laughing a batsman out...but in general to describes what fleas does as "bowling" is a travesty of the use of the word.

Huzzah, horrie returns the day that Fleas is rightly selected in the Australian team....and horrie doesn't miss the opportunity to have a gripe.horace wrote:given he will give lives and runs in the field, rolling his lefties over will leak even more runs...he truly is the modern day bevan

Arvo (for me - morning for you) taips. Just jumped on her PC under the guise of checking my work emails. Not around for long. She has dial-up and it's horrendously slow.

I have the day off as well (several actually). I am on a few days leave and am building my mother the picket fence that she has always wanted. My dearly departed old man saw such a fence as an abomination of nature and something that obstructed his mowing!!!
