Marsh called up as replacement for Jaques.
It's hard to see him getting a game though.
Hayden will not be dropped regardless of performances, and they'd be loath to rest him if we lost the B-G trophy because he needs time at the crease.
Katich has been consistent enough to earn his spot for the remainder of the series.
Marsh is a project player. He performed well in the IPL but his first class average of 35 remains considerably inferior to that of Hodge and David Hussey.
He is age on his side.

Please let Marsh open the batting for the first Ashes Test - preferably with Katich

"Marsh is a project player."
If Aunt Hilda or anybody else employed by CA ever utters that sentence you know he's doomed....
Matthew Hayden averaged about 60 when he played his first Test, and played his seventh about six years later. Warne's bowling average for Vic before Syd Jan 92 was Haydenesque. First class averages aren't the beginning and and of the story, never have been, and right now I'm happy to see the panel play anybody who's Marsh's age and looks a possibility, and we'll work out if they can play or not when we actually see them in action.

I think Marsh has the potential to be better than both Jaques and Katich. But he seems to be a different player in 4 day cricket. You could almost say he's a shotless crab. Needs to figure out his gameplan a bit better.

But he doesn't play his shots in the longer forms of the game, Horrie. It's only in one day cricket and T20 where he shows his full repertoire. He'll be the same as Katich if he opens in the test side.

I doubt he can be mentioned in the same sentence as crabs like Fleas (or bell, cook, dravid etc)

David Hussey must be pretty pissed off that he didn't get the call. He averages 20 runs per innings more than Marsh in first class cricket, scores at a good rate, and can also bowl handy off spinners in the Symonds mould. Also, Australia already have a backup opener in Michael Hussey.

Agree but he didn't prosper in his last three first class innings and Marsh who has performed similarly has age on his side.
As mentioned at the start, I doubt he will actually play test cricket this tour; maybe it's a learning experience.

All it will take is for Hayden to f*ck up his achilles again and Marsh will be playing.

Spot on Henry. Dussey was the man to replace White also.
Marsh may open the ODI games but if MTB plays well in the next two he could open with Watson.

Why bother picking MtFTB for the JAMODIs, he'll be gone by the end of next Aust summer (if he even gets that far).

and I know it is massive stretch of the imagination - but isn't ShyTYT there as the spinner so shouldn't he be replaced by a spinner? We could of course go in with 10 batsmen and see if we can make 300

On what basis have they selected Marsh over D.Hussey? The IPL and a few jamodis against the Windies and Bangladesh? This selection sounds more bizzare all the time. The fact is, for all of his natural gifts (that have mostly been on show in the shorter forms of the game) , Marsh averages 35 in first class cricket.

Not a bad idea to pick a younger player for some experience in the Test arena. Even if he doesn't play on this tour, he might get a feel for what it's like to be on the road and getting flogged.
