Re: Melbourne Cup
I'd go for Septimus as the trainer has more or less said the pace will be on (i.e he's gonna throw the rules of Oz racing out the window) but he's lumping a bit.
As I backed against Mayke Diva three years running I would suggest you check with your astrologer this year.

I swore Mayke Diva couldn't carry 58.5 in her last win in the Cup but she did.
58.5 to Septimus is a featherweight he has carried 62.1 and 63.5 in his last two wins against the best. Profound Beauty has a pull in the weights but unproven.
Overall record 8 wins and a second from 12 starts and his losses were in unsuitable races early on.
Now the sting is out he should bolt in.
Google 'centrebet' select the top URL and hit form guide at bottom left for your fancies

Re: Melbourne Cup
It's what they can carry in their first cup.
VC got like 55.5 when he should''ve had a lot more.
The following year he ran a pretty good third, still without the weight he should've bee carrying.
I expect Septimus to finish in the last third despite his stablemates trying to (illegally) make the running for him.

Sometimes they throw a hissie fit and miss the kick but O'Brien knows what the Cup is all about and Septimus is a first upper as well.
I'll be surprised if he beats himself and he should box seat it all the way as that's his style and he has won easily over 3600m.
The track is still a worry. Let it rain a bit more yet.

I think you missed the illegal bit. It may be common practice in the mother country but I would hope if they're is a pacemaker from the same stable and that pace maker comes stone motherless last all the stable horses bare disqualified.

Septimus is polarising the racing community, they either regard him as unbeatable or no chance.

Zipping and Barbaricus for me.
Although I haven't backed a MC winner for about 25 years.

Now THAT would be a sensation. I reckon the trainer will call the VRC's bluff on that.

Pacemakers have been used for years in Australia. The difference is they are teed up from another stable.
Gordon Spinks tells me many stories. One was how three of them got together to keep Baguette wide with Quinton on board. They were all Theo Green's boys and simply wanted to teach Ronnie a lesson.

Re: Melbourne Cup
I'm on Zipping.
I hope to repeat my Box Trifecta fluke in 2006.
Master O'Reilly and Littorio to round out the place getters.
Geez that would pay a huge dividend.

........ and including Nom Du Jeu, Septimus, Barbaricus & Littorio in the placings for trifectas & first fours.
However, that could all change if the track gets wetter. C'est La Guerre & Viewed both grow a leg in the mud.

Use 'Zipping' as a banker than fill it out with omen stuff off nath's avatar.
Either that or study the form religiously and get burnt anyway.

Re: Melbourne Cup
Of the European entries :
Septimus might be all the rage, but lumping top weight over 2 miles doesn't excite.
Johnny Murtagh however is riding at the top of his game right now.
Alessandro Volta at 40/1 seems a very tasty each way wager. carrying 7.13, he's a battle hardened 3 yo who did well in decent fields in both the Epsom and Irish Derby's and the GP de Paris over at Longchamp. First time over 2M however ... but he is bred to stay.
It's unlikely Septimus will have a pacemaker. Although trained by O'Brien, his other two in the race are owned by Magnier/Tabor, and those guys don't generally offer their nags out to front run for another owner regardless of having the same trainer.
Alessandro Volta might however pacemake for Honolulu.... but IMO he's better than Honolulu
Of the two Cumani horses, Mad Rush has been more consistent in better company than Bauer ...
