Chasing 350+ in the fourth innings...
Since 1877 we've only had seven occasions where a team has successfully chased down 350+ in the fourth innings...but four of them have occured in the last decade.
So why is this? Better bats? Flatter pitches? Faster outfields? Poorer bowling? Stoopider captaincy?
Successful run chases (250+)

Main reasons:
Pitches that don't fall apart as quickly.
Faster scoring generally.
JAMODI mindset.

Wood and Sarj put on their matchwinning partnership in Wood's 4th Test, Hobart was Gilly's 2nd, how many other matchwinning innings in those games were played by young batsmen who didn't know their Wisden and didn't know what they were doing was meant to be impossible?

Can't follow embee's mixture of John Forbes Nash and Anthony Braxton ... up to the local cross-blazing bit which is clear enough.
Generally would agree with JGK (which includes Spang's proto-point).
Out of which also a greater belief (possibly strengthened by the sports psychologists, Guinness ads, whatever) that you can go for it and get it.
Further, tp go with the psychological preparedness to climb mountains (of runs). also generally raised fitness and stamina levels, which accompany not only the one-day game(s), but all cricket. You would in the past find exceptional individuals who could keep going for hours against the odds (The Don, Eddie Paynter and Bluddy Boycs all come to mind, in various ways), but there is a more general requirement of high physical condition and toning in recent years. This allows greater and more muscular exertion by numbers of batsmen, not merely an individual or two surviving or stroking, gliding and accumulating even over several hours.
But it does start with sometimes indestructible pitches ....

It's probably also worth adding that defending teams are setting higher targets these days knowing that the previously 250-300 safe zone's can be easily reached.
So, while I haven't done the stats, I'd say there are more oppportunities for teams to chase the 350-450 targets these days as well. And in fact, I don't think a 500 run 4th innings is that far away.

Just a few ideas off the top of the head.
Better bats
Flatter pitches
Shorter boundaries
Better outfields
No rest day, so it's a day 5 wicket, not a day 6.
Teams more willing to chase a bigger target instead of playing for the draw
New ball after 80 overs, not 200 runs

Agree with that and there's a self-belief about teams approaching targets like that.
It's interesting though the notion that pitches don't fall apart as much as quite often there is less moisture put in at the start. The rest day is a factor but that's been done away with for some time now.

Do we have a list of Captains who have declared in the 3 innings and lost. Graeme Smith, Clive Lloyd and now KP are 3 I can think of.

And to be fair to Capt Sooky, he was desparately trying to generate an improbable series tying victory after a super crabbing session from Kallis but ran into Punter and Haydos is ridiculous form.
