The Nien team will be enhanced by another rocket scientist for the Boxing Day Test.

SK Warne joins the team. Cool

Not sure, h. Maybe they'll roster the verbose Banjo Heals off.

Benaud - Not called the doyen of cricket commentators for nothing.

Bill Lawry - Sure, he gets stuck into the Aussie cricket team. He'll also whinge about the weather, the crowd not being big enough, or too many people being queued outside, or the grass being just the wrong shade of green. He will criticise everything given half a chance, and even when there are lulls in theplay tries to talk it up and sound like he's OD'd on red cordial. Shoot him now, please, but not before you've shot...

Tony Greig - who talks non-stop crap, and more often than not sounds like he either commentating on a completely different game of cricket, or worse, a completely different sporting event altogether. Was promised a job for life by Kerry Packer. KP is now dead, and the idiot son of KP has left the building. Must surely be on thin ice.

Ian Chappell - I suspect he still has a job to 'balance' Tawny Grigg in the minds of the generation who watched them go each other in WSC days. He sounds like a tired and bitter old man. Has anyone ever seen him in the same place, at the same time as horace?

Mark Nicholas - Does a pretty good job of the hosting duties. His interviews of Benaud during the tea/lunch breaks have been interesting, then again, with a subject like that it's hard to f*ck it up. Should do less commentary, and more links. Still sounds like he's prepared to bend over for rear entry, or is gearing up to swallow every last drop when certain players are in close up. This should never be allowed.

Mark Taylor - Is still in touch with the modern game. Doesn't get preachy, or drawn in by hyperbole.

Michael Slater - Provides insight into the game at a better level than I thought he would. Not afraid to take a ribbing for his habit of getting out in the 90s way too often. Sometimes sounds like he's forgotten to take his medication and is way too excited for his own good.

Ian Healy - If Slats and Tubby are there, Heals isn't needed. End of. Even if only one of the others is there, Heals still isn't needed. Brings nothing to the table.

So that leave Benaud, Tubby, Slats. TGM when available, so far in his short stints in the comm box, he's been quite good. But Nein need to start doing what almost every other cricket broadcaster in the world does. Pick a global team. Mikey Holding would be a good start.

Quite agree with this assessment of Nicklearse.

A mate of mine and I were saying it for years over here before he even headed over in your direction, interesting that you guys should have a similar perception.

His festive tendencies have got worse over time as well, particularly when it comes to blonde haired Aussies, it's really quite nauseating. Definitely needs keeping well away from the comms box in my opinion.

Should have heard him on the SA commentary yesterday. Duminy must be very worried. He was comparing him to Sobers and Lara at one stage.

I'm not sure how hard the move is from Radio to TV and from TV to Radio. But Channel 9 could do with some fresh voices.

Glenn Mitchell is very strong and professional.

Ian Bishop is a wonderful commentator.

aye, but he'd need to cut his IQ in half to satisfy the needs of Nine's producers.

Actually Nine poached Dwayne Russell and Tim Lane (before Lane headed over to Ten) from Radio for its AFL coverage.

Nine really needs to revamp its commentatory team.

"Nine really needs to revamp its commentatory team."

And maybe they need to be less obvious than Warne.

He's most likely a breath of fresh air now, but in 5 years time he'll be fully homogenised and we'll be harping on how irritating he is, just like all the others.

I'm hoping Warnie lets slip with some gems like:

"Steve Waugh was a qunt"

"Gilly couldn't catch a cold"

"John the Bookie was a grouse bloke"

They'll probably have him on 5 sec delay.

The whole formula is tired. They're not allowed to be individuals at all. During one of the recent Cricket Show lunchtime breaks I was struck by the absurdity of Taylor, Slater, and (??) Healy standing beside one another in virtually identical Nein-approved suits.

Thinking back, I enjoyed the SBS commentary of the 2005 Ashes series (if not the result!!) because all the commentators were NOT all mish-mashed into some trademark easily digestible Macdonaldised Channel Nein product.
