Sutcliffe never averaged below 60. He was handy.embee wrote:Ricky Ponting, Australia's captain
I don't think there's any doubt about that [he is Australia's greatest opener]. You can even look back through the history books of the game and try and see if there's ever been a better opening batsman in the game, let alone Australia.
err... Hobbs for a start ...ya farken drunk two headed eejit
Still, to play over 100 Tests and average 50+ as an opener is no mean feat. Well played Galoot.

"maybe he thought he was 'owed' an extra year or two to make up for his early years in the wilderness"
Probably he just backed himself to continue well after a good series. Didn't work out... ah well, shit happens.

And relatively few tears from the Banjo contingent.
Where's qmy? I'll get him out of his hole.
Oi Bradman, the big Galoot was only a mere shadow of Tubby Taylor as an opening batsmen.

true and I made my point in a clumsy manner...more like owed it to himself...
your country awards honours to its players - eg Shermanator MBE
Sometimes we give your players knighthoods...

Re: Hayden calls it a day.
A cricketer can only play the bowling that's put in front of them.
Perhaps Michael Slater would have been considered greater than Hayden had the Queenslander been chosen in the 90s and the New South Welshman chosen in the 00s.
The point is we'll never know.
When Hayden got a clear run in the team he seized his opportunity. He made his name on the turning tracks of India and pummelled everybody in sight at home. He never dominated IN England, but every player usually has one blemish on their record.
Hayden had the ability to dismantle attacks. That's something the stats book can't show. It's a big part of the reason why I consider him a "great" and not merely a "very good".

re gavaskar...he was a great little bat and up there with the real 'goodens'...a bit like border he is valued for his longevity in the game and his toughness...also valued his own wicket with the tenacity of a boycott

So - you rank Hayden above Gavaskar. Haysus, now I've really heard it all.
Kind of makes me question the validity of whatever else you say.
