MS Dhoni- Will he match Imran Khan?

Saw this thread on PP a few months ago back then i didn't pay much attention to it...

So the question

Will MS Dhoni EVENTUALLY become the greatest captain to come out of Asia?
I would say why not? he has shown that he has the tools to get the job done

p.s this thread is primarily about captaincy and NOT a comparison between their cricketing ability or performance.

Or their looks?

girls these days are even more unpredictable than the Pakistani team....last year they thought Lasith Malinga was the sexiest man in cricket

Not sure about that. Very soon Dhoni will have to deal with new and inexperienced batsmen in the test team who might not as good as their predessors. It'll be difficult to come out with positive results then in tests.

But as far as his captaincy is concerned, he is extremely good. I'll say that he is better than any captain who I've seen till now.

Will Dhoni wind up shagging a sexy model as a wife? Albeit for a while...

Only if his team wins a WC and a couple of series away [tests] at least [ironically achived only by Dravid and not even Ganguly. Even the win in Pak in 04 had Dravid leading 2 tests and all credit cannot be given to Ganguly]. Otherise, like Ganguly he may end up as just another possible great but underachieving captain.

Dhoni still has time on his side and not counting WC next, eh may well achieve some of the other goals and may probably end up India's most successful captain ahead of Ganguly. But the real tests lie in what India do next when playing test in Aus, Eng, SL, NZ and SA and whether Dhoni will still be as competitive and a performing captain? We still have to see if Dhoni will suffer a brutal series loss and how he copes with it. SRT and Dravid both started their full time captaincy stints with a bang, but then lost the plot thereafter. So it's really too early to comment.

It's hard to imagine anyone ever matching the impact Imran made on his side and the game itself.

MS Dhoni will be MS Dhoni. He need not 'match up' sic to anybody else.

MS Dhoni has already matched upto BS Bedi if that be a yardstick. He has his own challenges and he sets his own targets.

Dhoni won just 2 home tests against Aus in a series. So did Azhar. Bedi's side won 2 tests in that series in Aus. Big difference [Though many will argue Bedi's side didn't face the strongest Aus side of that era who were away dancing in Packer's Circus]. I think only Ganguly can claim to be an India captain who did not lose a test series in Aus.

Dhoni has only won a one days triangular series in Aus. I reckon Sunil Gavaskar's side that won the Benson and Hedge Cup down under faced all the better cricket sides and attacks to win.

I agree that Dhoni has his own challenges. I just don't see how the Bedi comparision works.

I don't think Dhoni has it in him to become another Imran.

yeah the final results aren't always the best way to judge a captain...

...but its fair to say that Dhoni had a HUGE hand in India winning the T20 world cup and the tri series in AUS. Even in the home series vs AUS they won the 2 tests in which Dhoni was the captain.
