Fast bowling thread- Currently discussing Curtly Ambrose
Quick rule
2 pages per fast bowler(can extend to 3 with mutual agreement)
Lets start by discussing A Donald
Some ideas to get the ball rolling
1-How good?
2- How exciting?
3- Favorite/memorable moment?
4- Best performance?
My answers
1- very good...on par with Burenwala bombshell(Waqar Younis)
2- Very exciting...excellent action.
3- Spell vs Atherton and the bouncer to Sultan Zarwani(that in itself deserves a separate thread)
4- Not sure....

Is A Donald White Lightning? That means MacGill is Guiness (Flat and Bitter).

1-How good?
Very very very good. Easily in Saf AT XI.
2- How exciting?
Very when on song.
3- Favorite/memorable moment?
WC SF 99. Also, a superb spell to the Waughs in 97/8 at the SCG where he scared the shit out of MEW (who was closing in on 100) who then farmed the stike to Steve (in his 100th test) who was ultimately bowled by just about the fastest ball I have ever seen.
4- Best performance?
None against OZ that I can think of.

Another fave moment was in the Super 6 match at the 99 WC. Aust needed to win, Steve Waugh was in the middle of his masterpiece, Hansie brought back Donald to get SAf back in it. First ball Waugh laces through covers for 4. Advantage Oz.

Why? I really can't think of any single stand out performances against us that I saw.

Re: Fast bowling thread- Currently discussing Curtly Ambrose
1- Extremely good. Probably on a par with Waqar, but one notch below Ambrose and Mcgrath.
2- When in full flow he was extremely exciting.
3- Bowling against Athers at Trent Bridge in 1998. Fantastic, riveting test cricket.
4- As some have already said, it's hard to remember a truly stand out Donald performance. I didn't see it, but some of his finest work was apparently done on the flat pitches of the Sub Continent.

Indians really rate him(as you can see by TO's post)
When a bowler is as good as Donald most batsmen shy away from going after his bowling and those who do try end up failing....
HENCE
When the batsmen actually succed in their onslaught on a LIVELY pitch then its absolutely fantastic cricket....one of such moments was the 1998 Durban test match when White lightening was brought down to its knees by an unknown all rounder named Azhar Mahmood.
BTW he is a not just a great fast bowler but unlike most other fast bowler he is actually a very friendly and nice person.

I remember that spell. I could never fathom though why Cronje left him out of the attack for the majority of Waugh Junior's innings leaving the latter to face innocuous spin. The minute Donald came on he looked second rate.
How do you lighten white?

We are already on to the 2nd page...
AD happens to be my favorite S African cricketer ever(Steyn is VERY close now)...
even back then SA had a very good team but it wasn't the most exciting team but AD was certainly an exception.

Re: Fast bowling thread- Currently discussing Curtly Ambrose
Since this thread is running out of gas let
Donald vs Zirwani
"Sultan Zarawani captained the UAE side during their brief participation in the 1996 World Cup. He was the only native-born player, with almost all his team-mates being recently-imported immigrants. A legspinner and middle-order batsman, he learned the basics of the game while at school in Pakistan and went on to lead the UAE to 12 straight victories in the ICC Trophy, ensuring their qualification for the World Cup. He is best remembered for going out to face a rampant Allan Donald wearing only a sunhat. An unimpressed Donald dug one in, and sure enough, scored a direct hit on Zarawani's head - he survived the blow but lasted just another eight balls. As a cricketer, Zarawani was in over his head, but he probably didn't mind too much. A wealthy man, he was probably the only player in the tournament to own more than a dozen expensive cars. "
