We've had a lot of worse spinners before and will surely have a lot of worse ones when Swann and Panesar are long retired. As I said, it's his seemingly favoured status at all levels and the fact he stuck around past his sell-by date that makes people dislike him. As an international player he was mediocre but he did what he could with the ability he had.
I've never heard so much faint praise in one paragraph. We've had a lot worse spinners? What, like Ian Salisbury and Peter Such? Meh. At least they were attempting to take wickets. He played to the best of his ability? Good for him. So did I. Where's my props?
Aus wouldn't kill for such a spinner - that's getting silly - they've dropped a bloke who has 76 Test wickets at an average of 33.
Ashley Giles would never have gotten 54 Tests for Aus, in any era. I doubt he'd have gotten much more than 5, even in this current situation.

Well it wasn't his fault he got picked, and I don't think he let anyone down given his ability! He wasn't a great player but he doesn't deserve to be a hate figure, that's all I'm saying. Well, maybe he will deserve it when he becomes Test coach...

Fair enough. He's a nice bloke who has the second highest average of any Test bowler who's taken more than 150 wickets.

Had to check who the first was... had some less than illustrious Bangladeshi, Zimmer or Snoozer in mind, given 50 guesses I wouldn't have come up with Ravi Shastri. More than capable batsman though who opened on occasions.

24.1
Hoggard to Ponting, no run, dramatic leave, Jones standing up whips off the bails
Flintoff and Hoggard chat and point alot. The two slips go wider and the gully moves squarer
24.2
Hoggard to Ponting, 1 run, dropped! Short, pulled but Ponting didn't get over it and Giles, at deep square leg, spills one above his head, He got both hands to it but never really left the ground with his jump. As the crowd jeer, Giles hangs his head
24.3
Hoggard to Hussey, no run, left alone by Hussey and Jones, standing back for the left hander, takes it
24.4
Hoggard to Hussey, no run, Hussey again leaves one slanted across him
24.5
Hoggard to Hussey, no run, that's three in a row left alone
24.6
Hoggard to Hussey, no run, and the same, a low-key end to an eventful over
Poor old Giles. Under fire anyway, some wag in the crowd shouts "Panesar".
End of over 25 (1 run) Australia 79/3
MEK Hussey 9* (10b 1x4) MJ Hoggard 13-2-29-2
RT Ponting 36* (75b 4x4) SJ Harmison 5-2-23-0
Arguably the turning point of the 2006/07 Ashes series.
He let his country down big time.
Would any Australian team have wanted an Ashley Giles in their eleven? Not a chance.

He kept Vaughany warm at nights, though.

Not when you can have Bryce McGain or Xavier Doherty...WideWally wrote:24.1

hahahaha
Yeah, its easy to dismiss yourselves as being above having the King of Spain in your side when you can field Shane Warne.

Fixed.

In fact, maybe their current fixation with spinners with "Ash" in their name is an attempt to find one to emulate the legendary Juan Carlos... or maybe it's just that it's the closest they will get to having the Ashes for a while!
