Re: British author wins nobel prize for literature.
On which note, I see that Ann Enright won the Man Booker prize for her novel "The Gathering" ... against all the odds.
I read an extract or two from it - one of which describes her relationship with her mother ... strange, cold and very heavy ...
Anyone read the book?

Does any normal person read Booker prize winners?

Stop being so damned pompous.
Amis was always a good read.
But yes, have to say the "prize" is oft ridiculed.

Not at all - and the fact that the panel always seem to go for a wierdo outsider tells its own tale.taipan wrote:Merlin wrote:Stop being so damned pompous.

Similar to the crap that wins the Turner prize in "art" these days!

Re: British author wins nobel prize for literature.
I very much enjoyed Margaret Attwood's (Booker) winning novel The Blind Assassin, though I only just found out it had won. I like her work generally.
I really struggled through Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda, which I read only because I had loved Bliss.

Re: British author wins nobel prize for literature.
There have been loads of truly great booker prize winners.
Of the few I've read: Midnight's Children, The Life of Pi and Schindler's Ark.
I gather that Amsterdam, Rites of Passage, The God of Small Things, The English patient and Vernon God Little are all excellent. There's probably more great books in the list of winners.

That list really highlights the dearth of quality fiction over the last 30 years.

Even if he's a countryman of mine, I find JM Coetzee pretty dire. I get the feeling he hates his characters, and that his writing springs from a deep-seated desire for revenge.

I've read only a couple of books by Coetzee. I did like them.

Have to admit I read only two, and couldn't relate to any of his characters. Even worse, I got the feeling that he couldn't either. To me, that is the first deadly sin in an author.

Re: British author wins nobel prize for literature.
I can honestly say that reading D.Lessing's "golden notebook" and subsequent Children of violence series in my early 20's changed my views about relations between men and women

It makes the dearth of quality literature even more obvious . . . (though I did like some of Timothy Mo's stuff).
