A new book thread
Hi,
After picking the multitude of minds on other forums, I have at last brought my question to the folk of Flerming Burls. I would have done so first and foremost were it not for the infection, the poison that is the Welsh people which forever lingers about this place.
Me, I likes to read science fiction and fantasy. I don't mean lower class alien sex science fiction (though in pornographic form on a television set this is considerably more desirable), I just mean good, solid bookery. I was rather hoping that, once we got past the homos, the qunt badgering, the shitfests, and all that shizzle, you might be able to pick your minds and give me some recommendations on these particular genres (even if there is a tendency to put the two together, which is a bit like putting a sheep with a Welsh person, they do compliment each other in a way, but there is no consent from one party and it is not in any way natural).
In the meantime this can serve as a semi-book thread until eight hours time when it inevitably falls off the page never to be seen again unless someone has a hissy-fit in it.

Re: A new book thread
Sorry, gussie, but as much as I would love to talk books with you about the only sci-fi I've read are Wells' novels . . . and for fantasy I guess LoTR and CS Lewis as a kid and, later, Warnie's autobiography . . . .

Considering I'm the only Welsher on this Forum, I won't rise to the bait.
As for the books, I'm currently reading Rat King by James Clavell.
He also wrote Tai-pan.

Not into much sci-fi or fantasy reading.
The English Patient is beautifully written - elegant - and the movie was none too shabby either.
Also read Russell Brand's My Booky Wook, godzhelpme - and it explains everything.

Re: A new book thread
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.
Fantastic book which spawned an excellent series. The subsequent books, sometimes known as the Lusitania Trilogy, never quite matched the original, but all were thought provoking in their own way.
Card eventually returned to the Ender story and explored in more detail some of the other characters by retelling the tale from their perspective. It could have got rather contrived by this point, but even these were still well worth reading.
Top notch sci-fi, and if you start with Ender's Game and don't like it, I'll give you the money myself as they say.
On a related subject - if you want to watch a good sci-fi film, Sunshine is well worth looking out for. Brilliant stuff.

Re: A new book thread
Anything by Asimov or Clarke I would consider top-notch science fiction. Also a lesser known author whose name currently eludes me but I'll get right back to you on that, promise

Re: A new book thread
I agree on Ender's Game - superb.
Other than LOTR, the best fantasy series I have read is the "Song of Ice and Fire" but George RR Martin. Utterly brilliant although Martin runs the risk of doing a Jordan and dying before he finishes the freaking series. The first book is called A Game of Thrones.

I enjoyed Wyndham's SF books when I was a kid ... not so much the triffids, but Chrysalids and Midwitch Cuckoo. Haven't read much SF in recent years. 'Control' by Goldman ... that was mildly interesting.

I know this isn't what you're looking for but I loved the Fighting Fantasy books by Ian Livingstone & Steve Jackson as a kid....
My fantasy & sci-fi reading stopped there...

Did Wally write the book? He must have first hand experience on the subject matter.

Smerky, I was referring to Sheep Farming in Barnet. It came out in the late 70s.
Actually, I'm a supporter of all things Welsh.

Reminds me of my fave kiwi joke:
An Australian tourist is travelling through rural NZ when he sees a sheep with its head caught in a wire fence. A farmer is behind the sheep having his way with her. The Aussie says "Geez mate, in Australia we usually shear them". The farmer replied, "Fark off you Aussie, I'm not sharing her with anyone".
