So it looks like the Irish and the Dutch will get through to the final 8 but Aust will miss out.

In a normal world, there would be two teams from the "Big 8" plus one "minnow" in each pool.
Why didn't we just give India a bye to the semi-final plus a second chance if they lose there? It would have been more transparent.
Look out! Look out! There' some wool over your eyes.....

Bangladesh were allowed to get 20 runs more than they should have by the Irish.

Fair fecks to the Bhoys in (Emerald shade of) Green again (*).
And to the wily Johnston, who, O'Dubber though he may be, clearly feels back on hone soil at the Bridge that bears his ancestral name.
Would be kinda funny if Ireland now went and knocked out Colly's men!
(*) I'm told Bangladesh means "Green Valley", or somethign like that.

You look at Ireland, and they're quite a decent side with the likes of the O'brien brothers and Rankin backed up by some less talented but extremely hard working guys. If you added Ed Joyce and Eoin Morgan to their ranks, I think they'd give Bangladesh more than a good game in a test match.

Possibly but if I hear any more 'give Ireland test status' like we do after every minnow win i'll do my nut.

Well they're easily the pick of the minnows these days. I think they won the ICC intercontinental cup (4 day games) thingy as well.

Ashraful: We didn't bat well today. Ireland played very good cricket and all credit to them. When Mortaza batted really well, we thought if we can bowl well and field well we can win but they played really well. First of all, we didn't bat too well. Shakib bowled well but I guess they batted really well today."
Well well, another upset. Bangles out, Ireland through.

Good point. I can't understand how people who practice hitting the stumps so much can miss so prodigiously. I mean, I get my rubbish in my bin every time nowadays.....
Perhaps we should practice just missing the stumps in the hope that, in a match situation, we'll f*ck it up by consistently hitting them by accident.
Re: ICC World Twenty20, 2009 - Group A
Siddons was furious with the loss
Story
"We didn't make anywhere near enough runs, the par score there against any attack is 170. It's a flat wicket, fast outfield, a short boundary to one side. We had a reasonable start, we were 40 or 50 off the first six and from there 160 is [possible] if you bat sensibly to a plan, but if the boys just keep disobeying the plan you end up with a shitty little score like 130. I'm borderline disappointed and angry. I'm not sure which way to treat them when I speak to them in a minute."
Don't blame him really, the bangers need to sort their act out. They've accomplished nothing of any significance since they gained full international status.

Re: ICC World Twenty20, 2009 - Group A
Discussion on Sky this afternoon about the anomolies of cricket funding ...
It Seems that the chairman of the Oirish Cricket Board (do they really have one?) was rightly bitching about the prize/appearance money allocations - handed out after the last World Cup, claiming that whilst Zimbabwe (as a "test" nation) creamed in $7 million ... the Oirish were handed a paltry £37,000 for their efforts.
I reckon that right now, sub-continental votes permitting at the ICC, if the Oirish were included in the top tier and pitted against the subbi's vote-supporting lackeys, the Zimboks, the Oirish would seriously kick their arses.

watched the last 4 or 5 overs
O'Brien is a very fine hitter, IIRC his brother knocked us out of the 2007 world cup. Ireland are a very good side

That's hard to believe!
Have they "exported" even more than the Irish over the years?
Chinese (or Mandarin), English, Spanish, Arabic, some other Chinese language, French, ..... Russian, Japanese ..... Portuguese .... nah, that can't be true. Someone must have been having you on!!

Very spirited, at least. And shrewdly captained. They don't bottle it when they have a chance.

According to wiki (link) it ranks seventh.PeterCS wrote:That's hard to believe!

Mandarin, Hindi, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Bengali.
Although according to another article in wiki (link) it seems to rank fourth...
And yet another article says 'that for the world's largest languages, it is impossible to give an estimate of the number of native speakers with a certainty better than 10% or so. Macrolanguages like Chinese, Hindustani or Arabic are particularly difficult to define, and estimates consequently show uncertainties of the order of 25%.' (yet another link)

Surely French has got to be up there.
In other news, Sehwag's seriously injured and is leaving the team for surgery. Karthik to join the squad.
Also, the legend Kumble is commentating for Star Cricket. Predictably a bit boring now that he's starting, but he's got a great voice and nice insight even so.
