Dead of winter, dark at 5:30pm, cold (and perhaps wet)...game kicks off around 6:00pm, middle session ends around 10:40pm (decision time to sit up to the end or turn in)...
The Ashes IS Test cricket. Everyone else can go fark themselves, it's all a side show compared to the Ashes.
Soft Wozzie - if the last session starts at 11pm there is no decision to make. It's when it starts at 1am and there are still 40 overs to go that you have a decision to make.... and then stay on the couch.
I reckon the 89 Ashes cost me quite a few marks in my HSC a couple of months later.

Kids this year could get the bonus of the swine flu for a few days off while the Ashes is on.

Ah, yes, that last session between 1 am and 3:30 am ... watching matchstick-eyed, dozing, 'fark I missed a wicket', snore, watch, snore, watch, it's cold, watch, another farking wicket ... watch the replay, snort, burn self on heater, watch part of the last over, snore, wake up to repeats. At least it's not the test pattern ...

My wife will attest that this....
...was me (as I sat with said matchsticks in eyes) during much of Ashes 89.

My Ashes watching from down under usually consists of 'fark we're crap, wheres my video of the 86/7 tour?'

Still, JKL, you must have fond memories of ...

I was too nervous. I hadn't banked on us winning in 2005 tbh, the series just unfolded in an unbelieveable way.

Indeed it did. Funny how I don't feel as sick about Ashes 05 as I do about Ashes 81.
Maybe it's the fact that it was such a grouse series and it really wasn't decided until Warnie dropped KP at The Oval.

Ashes 81 we were led by a captain without a clue, and were abysmal.skully wrote:Indeed it did. Funny how I don't feel as sick about Ashes 05 as I do about Ashes 81.

Ashes 05 we were led by a captain without a clue, and were just pipped at the post.
I am suddenly very afraid of this year's series.

Indeed Zog. I have a very uneasy feeling.
That brittleness in the batting that you highlighted when the squad was announced worries the bejesus out of me.

And worse, a captain without a clue and without Warnie, Pidg and Gilly.

Aye - actually I felt sick after Lords 05, same old same old when deep down we knew we had a decent side.
Not as sick as Adelaide though, basically that was tour over. I put a bet on Aus and went to bed, content that we'd go to the 3rd test in better spirits. Got the same feeling in my stomach as if 2 blokes with baseball bats are about to do you over when I turned on the telly. Nearly threw up.
Infact in 05' I only really got nervous after we went 2-1 up, was probably just glad to be competing for once.

I will feel even sicker if the T1 XII includes Bung (as I suspect it now will) and, even worse, the WHI.

Exactly the same feeling I had the morning I got up after Headingly '81. Still haunts me.JKLever wrote:Not as sick as Adelaide though, basically that was tour over. You should've tried being an Aussie kid in England in 1981...skully wrote:Exactly the same feeling I had the morning I got up after Headingly '81. You should've tried being there and hanging shit on Poms for a couple of days straight.
