Very quick question Empty Very quick question

Post by PlanetPakistan Wed 10 Jun 2009, 16:41

Arafat and Rao look like medium pacers and hardly ever trouble the batsmen with their pace YET i saw quite a few balls from yasir being clocked at well over 140(around 142-143) and 1 or 2 balls from Rao were also clocked around 141 or 142.

ON THE OTHER hand(literally in this case) Aamer looks a lot faster and has been troubling the batsmen with his extra pace YET he was being clocked at around 140

so whats going on?

yeah but its quite strange how the speed gun is playing tricks on us.

thats why i go by what i see and NOT by whats on the speed gun, Aamer looks very quick while the other 2 don't seem that fast

PERHAPS its the bounce issue because i think Aamer is a lot taller and has a higher action than Arafat

May be a question of length. Fuller balls appear to read higher on the speed gun than shorter balls ie all the really quick readings seem to be from yorkers

Forum gold, almost.

The speed gun picks up the speed of the ball in the horizontal plane from the bowler's hand towards the gun. When the bowler goes for a short-pitched delivery, the angle of release of the ball is more downward than that of a fuller-length delivery, so while the shorter-pitched delivery may leave the hand faster than the fuller-length ball, part (much) of that velocity is directed downwards, resulting in a lower speed reading in the horizontal plane.
