Doesn't sound good does it?
This from umpire Rudi Koertzen: ""We are concerned about the softness of
the ground at the moment. Our biggest concern is to the right of the wicket,
where there's a fairly muddy area. We will do everything to get the game on the
road as soon as we can. We believe it's not so good for the rest of the day. If
the sun comes out and we get some wind we might have something by mid-afternoon,
but we haven't at the moment. You'll probably have a problem with the grip under
the feet of the bowlers too."

The BBC test commentary is even more surreal than usual - they've been talking about oil paintings all morning

That's Tom Fordyce for you!
He's a decent bloke actually. Ran into him in the Frog and Princess pub in Paris during the last rugby World Cup. What a messy evening that turned out to be.

Someone said it earlier. We're carrying on like England. FFS! We should've won the first test (would've if qmyjr was captain or General Haig's pet tortoise Reggie) and we go into total meltdown.
Hope for five days of rain and sanity to prevail before the next test.

And fark the choppers. Harriers after the pitch has been liberally doused in oil will do the trick.
Though sans harriers I think the oil thing has been done before.

Not really Lever. I don't want some pissy little draw just because a few weak dicks daredn't run on a soggy bunch of grass and mud. Pussies.

Are you refering to a post a few pages back? Hey, i'd rather play but it's funny seeing the panic set in as the Ashes draws closer to the end with dubious weather forecast.

I wasn't really referring to anything. I was just saying that it's frankly ridiculous(bar the fact the ball may get wet) that the players are not allowed to run on a greasy pitch. Get the full spikes on and grit your teeth you bunch of pampered shitsuckas....

It's no different to the way they go off for bad light if the sun goes behind a cloud though, is it? Test cricket is its own worst enemy more often than not.

A man after my own heart. Plus a soggy pitch gives you ample opportunity to more flexibly intepret the spirit of the game.

Agreed.
Don't get me started on bad light... for the fielding side anyway... I've always found facing the ball in bad light a little like strobe lighting, apart from the ball is sped up and there's no light. Well, hopefully you get my meaning. Anyway, if the batsmen can see enough to bat on, the fielding side have an inordinately easier job. Ridiculous.
Re: England v Australia, 3rd Test, Edgbaston, Jul 30 - Aug 3
Exactly what I said earlier in the thread, perhaps lost in all the Aussie whinging about TAYne POCson... get the football boots on if necessary. Those worried about injuries can bowl off 10 paces or let boundaries go past them without diving if they prefer, it's their own choice. If it's not actually raining they should be out there.Brass Monkey wrote:I wasn't really referring to anything. Yup. You obviously get light so bad it's dangerous, and that's fair enough, but all too often you'll see the batsmen smashing the ball all over the park and then go off when offered the light. As if they're really having a problem?! And then they'll do it when there's a spinner on.

Aye, I can't think of many other sports(bowls?) that would not start because of a bit of sogginess. I blame the old school.

I attribute it to nothing other than laziness and covering their own backs in case of something bad - bit like the health and safety brigade, or the PC brigade. No backbone whatsoever...

Some sunshine at Edgbaston now, but the covers are still on as they try and get the water off them.
