Yeah, I feel sorry for Johnno. He seems a likeable bloke and a huge talent. He got a rough one when he batted and then that terrible lbw decision against Shermi. Had that gone the right way, it might have been the moment when things started to turn around for him.

Maybe he anally raped Rudi at some stage. Or shagged one of Rudi's kids.Rob I wrote:Yeah, I feel sorry for Johnno. He seems a likeable bloke and a huge talent. Zat wrote:It's ridiculous that he's been appointed to successive Ashes Tests given his recent deplorable record.
Precisely. According to the TMS team and a few of the Aussie commentators who talk each night before play, the players have lost confidence in him and the general feeling is that he's guessing most of the time. This seemed also characteristic of Bucknor during his last five years or so. It's up to the ICC or whoever manages the umpires, to observe its officials, especially those in the twilight years of their careers and tap them on the shoulder when they appear to have lost it.

Yeah he was the only umpire in that game.
In April 2007 he stood in the World Cup final in Barbados, but the farcical finale of that match - and his role in misinterpreting the rules regarding bad light - led to his suspension for the Twenty20 World Championships in September.
Koerzten is not immune to the pressures of the job, and in 2000-01 his errors contributed to one of the most fractious matches of modern times, the second Test between Sri Lanka and England at Kandy.
Massive cock up but Rudi wasn't the only one at fault.
The match referee Jeff Crowe took the blame for the farcical finish to the World Cup final which saw Australia celebrate victory twice and forced Sri Lanka to bat in pitch-black darkness. But he suggested the third umpire Rudi Koertzen may have initiated the process leading to chaotic scenes at the climax of the game.
Crowe, despite heading up a team of officials which included the umpire Steve Bucknor, standing in a record fifth World Cup final, managed to overlook a basic playing condition which states that once 20 overs have been bowled in both innings enough cricket has been played to create a match. A result can then be declared under the Duckworth-Lewis system for rain-affected games.

I've said it before, Umpires should be appointed on merit, regardless of country. Or at the very least, boards should be offered the choice of 'best umpires' or 'best neutral umpires' for series. Not perfect, but it would reduce the problems, and encourage umpires to excel, by giving them a chance to ply their trade in their own country.

And more:
The International Cricket Council has delivered a humiliating punishment on the five match officials whose combined errors caused the World Cup final in Barbados to be completed amid farcical scenes of near-darkness.
The two onfield umpires, Steve Bucknor and Aleem Dar; the reserve umpires Rudi Koertzen and Billy Bowden, and the match referee, Jeff Crowe, have all been suspended for the duration of the next ICC event, the Twenty20 World Championship in South Africa in September.

Oh an Aussie cricket forum, must be correct then.
You know red, a prominent forummer here recently commented to me that he has stopped taking shots at SA for fear that it might be construed that he was agreeing with you.

They should've been suspended by their testicles for the duration of that event.taipan wrote:And more:

I thought the prominent forummers here were a tough bunch of independent-minded thinkers.
BTW, why has Rudi's incompetence become a SA issue? I thought umpires were neutral. Koertzen should be able to be criticised without allegations that the critics are somehow making it a patriotic issue.

"Maybe I'll get down there and torment the Shemanator," taunts Shane
Warne after hearing England are playing a lot of poker at the moment.
Yeah, it was very funny the first time.
Warne is in danger of being a bit of a twat and is showing a lack of respect for a fellow professional. You don't have to rate someone but at least show them a bit of courtesy.

Odd mindset at cricinfo...
Any thought that the conditions might mean this match peters out to a very tame draw. Meaning It's suddenly a lot easier for Australia to hold onto the Ashes compared to if England won this one?Barring an act of God or Duke, England should enter the home stretch of the Ashes series in the ascendancy. When Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell accepted the umpires' offer of bad light at 5.45pm, the hosts packed their kitbags content in the knowledge that their dominant day two performance, coupled with the bleak forecast for days three and five of the Test, had made Australia's task of squaring the series at Edgbaston difficult in the extreme.
