Unruly Aussie Crowds...
...in 1903/04...
Full text
But there was one thing that infuriated him [Pelham ('Plum') Warner], and that was the unruly behaviour of the local crowds. Players and officials were regularly heckled and abused. When the home favourite Clem Hill was given run out at Sydney, a few toughs jeered the umpire responsible, yelling “Have you got your coffin ready, Crockett?”, “Which gate are you leaving by, Crockett?” and “How much did you pay Crockett, Warner?”
For the English players, many of whom had never been barracked before, this was all deeply unsetting. Back home, cricket-watching was a pastime for middle-class gentlemen. So when touring teams arrived at the Sydney Cricket Ground, and looked out at the massed ranks of farmers and furriers, they must have felt like Christians entering the Colosseum.

I like the idea of a bunch of English toffs being used to polite applause and cucumber sandwiches, confronting a hostile SCG crowd

Indeed.
... it's chicken balti or tandoori chicken or hungarian ghoulash or thai red curry sandwiches these days!
Cucumber sandwiches are a rareity these days unless visiting a club surrounded by cucumber fields!

Don't.
I'm honoured!
Though I insist yet again I am NOT the friggin' NFI .... but let's not go down that road again!!
PS If BCL>SRT, does it mathematically follow that NFI > BCL+SRT ?

I think it's more that Zim was speaking of polaite socai-ety 100+ years ago. It wasn't a comment on more recent English mores. And he was stunned anyone would assume it was.
If I read it right.

"The man who asked for a double scotch in the Pump Room in Bath", H.M. Bateman, 1931. Already satirising archaic "polite society".
Bateman was born an Aussie, BTW.
