The Red Sox will host the Colorado Rockies in the World
Series opener Wednesday night at Fenway Park.
How many countries are participating?
How often is the final played on another continent?
How many winners have come from outside the US?
How many Americans know that where is a world beyond their borders?
Actually a Canadian team has won it.

Actually, that's not true, Batstink. It was referred to as the World's Championship Series initially becasue no other country played it at that time. The winner would, by default, be champions of the world.Batfink Begins wrote:mynah wrote:

The newspaper "The World" sponsored it in it's early stages - hence the World Series.
But most Yankee fat-heads probably don't know that either and probably think the whole world plays baseball, but just aren't good enough to compete.

Ah , so It is international, like those hotels back home in the seventies. Meant the black guy walking down the corridor was not necessarily a porter, but possibly Denzil Washington.taipan wrote:mynah wrote:Try this for wacky:Red Sox Rout Indians 11-2 to Advance to World Series

Re: Wackiest headline of the year?
The Toronto Blue-Jays won it about 10 years ago. The Americans sooked like there was a sooking competition between Smith, Ponting and Ganguly.
Tac, sticking to my story unless you have some other link type she-it.

It was on a 9-part series on the history of baseball I saw a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the link. You could excuse the Yanks, considering that many of them only discovered in 2001 that there is quite a bit of world beyond their borders.

Yeah, just feel more sorry for them that they can't excel in proper world games of sport and needed the 'props'.
Re: Wackiest headline of the year?
Odd, now that you mention it - I can't think of any sport in which the US has come up with a great national team (not counting those just put together for the Olympics).Batfink Begins wrote:Yeah, just feel more sorry for them that they can't excel in proper world games of sport and needed the 'props'.

Re: Wackiest headline of the year?
None really. Boxing, Athletics and Golf are the only three world sports where they consistantly do well and considering their Ryder Cup team has gone downhill, I'm not sure they're counted of recent years. Considering the money they pour into every single sport, it's a bit of a sham.
Re: Wackiest headline of the year?
They certainly have good sportsmen/women... but no truly good national teams. I guess the size of the country is a factor in getting players together.
