Prints his name as *****.
Another classic opening brought to mind by the T20 Finals today (why no thread?), John Sturges' hommage to John Ford and Fred Zinneman's High Noon with Frankie Laine vocals instead of Tex Ritter. Lots of opening credits however, don't know what Burt Lancaster thought. The saloon sequence was adapted by Howard Hawks with John Wayne and Dean Martin in his 1959 oater Rio Bravo:

Oh, F.a.g.a.n?
Some people are incapable of self-censoring their use of homophobic slurs, so the first three letters now get cut.

This is not as clear cut as it may appear.
If DVD was a word (deeveedee?) rather than an acronym then the normal plural/possessive distinction would apply. However the apostrophe is not universally regarded as wrong when indicating a plural of an acronym. Certainly, where an acronym ends with S it can look weird (e.g. "I have several alternative CVs"). It gets a bit too picky to say that the plural apostrophe is acceptable for some acronyms but not for others.
1980s and 1980's is also interesting since "the 1980s" is a plural to start with. At the very least the possessive should be 1980s' but it is never written that way. I prefer to see 1980s when simply refering to the decade and 1980's when refering to things belonging to that decade. However this doesn't apply to single numbers (e.g. the phrase "1's and 2's" is easier to read than "1s and 2s"). As with acronyms, I think it's too picky to have one rule for single digit numbers and a separate one for multi-digit numbers, so I'm not at all upset by 1980's as a plural as long as the context of the sentence removes any ambiguity.
i done ruly care bout the 1980s'ss. evryfink was puffy bak then thasal i bin tol.
my mum ses ya shooden rite sumfink until yav spelchekked it. bugga that to hard. i jus gess fer meself then rite wot i feel.

The great Sir Rex:
although even he commits a solecism when he states that:
"she should be taken out and hung"
in order to rhyme with "tongue" in the next line.
As everyone knows, of course, meat, or a picture, is hung, whereas a man (or woman) is hanged but as the lyrics were written by an American who admits in the song that in America they haven't used English for years such an error is hardly surprising.

Censorship of words that have more than one meaning annoy me.
Referring to something as "the f.a.g. end of town" is perfectly legitimate, as is saying "can I bum a f.a.g" off you".
On another forum I saw the word tycoon changed to ty****.
Obviously I'm grateful to have a forum in the first place, but crap like that does get under my skin.

Too knackered to contribute meaningly to this other than to say congratulations to all who have contributed to this thread.
It's been the most fascinating non-cricket thread I've ever read on here.
I'm grammatically anal and a film buff so that probably helps, but there's been some proper erudite posts back there.
What a good do.

Re: Old Movies
How old is 'old' on this thread?
Since there won't be a unified response, anyway, I'll submit 'The world's fastest Indian' as a wonderful movie. See it if you haven't.
PS it's not about Munaf Patel.

Introduced a new directional style that was still being imitated decades later. Killer soundtrack from Simon & Garfunkle.

Re: Old Movies
I forgot this was a thread about movies.
Of movies more than 50 years old the following 10 spring to mind:
Cassablanca
Rear Window
12 Angy Men
A Night at the Opera
Judgement at Nuremberg
Dambusters
A Night to Remember
The Day the Earth Caught Fire
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
The African Queen
Movies < 50 years old
The Mission - the best cinematic work of fiction ever
Local Hero
2001: A Space Oddysey
Fail Safe
Dr Strangelove
The Doors
The Commitments
Apocalypse Now
Crocodile Dundee
A Hard Days Night
and then there's the Woodstock documentary - best movie ever.

Re: Old Movies
I'm currently watching a box set of the Coen Brothers.
The Big Lebowski (Watched)
The Hudsucker Proxy
Barton Fink
Blood Simple
I know these aren't old films, but they were mostly all made over a decade ago. I wanted several White Russians, McDonalds and a Beer after watching 'The Dude'.
Also got Rumble Fish to sink my teeth into.
