Way to play in the spirit of the game, Ricky!!
Aus need only a draw to retain the ashes, and surprise surprise, they suddenly come up with their worst over rate of the series. 85.3 overs in one day including the extra half hour is a f*cking disgrace. If Ponting isn't banned for that then the ICC clearly couldn't care less about over rates.
Gotta love that spirit of the game from Ponting though!

Mr Spirit of Cricket definately would not use such tactics. There must be some sort of mistake.

Yup, he'll come up with one of his "anyone who knows me knows that I always play in the spirit of the game" preaches. Actually everyone knows Ponting, and we all know that he's a common as muck, dim witted bogan from the dodgy part of a dodgy Australian state, who thinks that the spirit of the game guidelines were co written by Ian Chappell and Dennis Lillee.

Like Ponting wanted to rush through the overs in Cardiff...you know, when it called for more overs to be bowled?
Strauss played Ponting at his own game, and he didn't like it. Typical.

Well, apart from using it as a stick with which to beat him (which is always worthwhile) - is he not under threat of a ban for repeated slow over-rates, or has that expired?
On a more general point, all sides do this, and I wish the ICC would take much stronger action. It's robbing the paying spectators of part of their ticket price, at a time when they keep saying that Test match cricket is under threat.

Get over it. What did they bowl 13.5 an hour?
Thats standard Test cricket over rates for any side in world cricket.
Nothing to see here!!

It should be simple- Barring an unavoidable delay, like broken sightscreens etc, if the fielding team doesn't bowl 90 overs in the day even with the extra half hour, the captain should be banned immediately for one test match.

Probably the need for end of match pitch invasions, is becoming ever-more probable.

Shurely NOT Ricky Ponting's "spirit of cricket side" - the two faced prick ...
Ponting face a ban?? Un-f**king likely ... He'll be lauded down in the colony as a fecking hero for the craftsmanship he exhibited in slowing the over rate down so as to ensure England scored less after a day's play should he return with the Urn.
Two faced qunt.

This is ridiculous. Englands over-rates in this series have been atrocius the whol way through as well. Its a standard Fact of Test match cricket, that over rates suck and spectators lose out.
This just smacks of pointless desperation to have a go at a bloke no one likes!

If Ponting wants to preach about the spirit of the game, then he clearly opens himself up to this sort of criticism when Aus don't appear to be rushing through their overs in a game they only need to draw.
Besides, it's still not an excuse that because every team does the same thing, then it's ok. Ponting has been fined the most in the last 2 years, so is evidently the worst captain in world cricket in regards to over rates. The ICC needs to set an example. May as well use the most disliked player in world cricket to do so

Re: Way to play in the spirit of the game, Ricky!!
The Spirit of the game as far as I'm concerned, doesn't mean you have to tell your quicks to bowl of a short run in order tog et some overs in. Thats just standard run rates worldwide due to the irrationally long run-ups bowlers take.
And how is it against the spirit of the game not to rush through their overs when they need a draw? Nowt wrong with that in my mind, thats just general common sense. If they were at 11 overs an hour you'd have a point, but at a pretty standard 13.5 you don't.
It just a few people spouting off against a cricketer they dislike for very little if any reason.

Then you need to come up with something more newsworthy IMO Merls. If he had tried to claim the half volley catch off Broad then go for your money, but this is just churlish at best.

Yeah, just like it's also common sense to try and delay the game a bit by calling on the physio when you aren't injured. Ponting didn't like that one though and went on a rant about it. the people who saw Ponting's comments as hugely hypocritical are now entitled to do the same thing, imo.

Re: Way to play in the spirit of the game, Ricky!!
I do accept the point that all sides bowl their overs too slowly generally - and when it suits them in particular, and to that extent Ponting is being hypocritical, but having said that being four overs short is not really evidence of blatant cheating to be honest.
I'd still like captains to be shot at dawn for not managing 90 overs in the day though. It's disgraceful really.

They're supposed to bowl 90 overs before 6 o'clock. Aus bowled 85.3 when they came off at 6.30.
Yes, all side do it these days, but Ponting has been pulled up the most times for it. Clearly being fined has no effect on him, so it's time he was banned for a test match.

Calling on a 12th man and a Physio with 2 overs to go he had every right to say something at Cardiff. That was as blatant as it gets!

Ponting gives me every reason to spout off about him though in regards to fair play, no one doubts he's a great player.
