SCG's Noble Stand to get $60m face lift
http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/cricket/noble-stand-to-get-60m-facelift/2009/09/01/1251570710437.html
It's actually going to be knocked down and a new stand built, as will happen to the Bradman and Messenger stands in coming years, to take the SCG capacity to 50 000.

Actually , I did watch Plugger's point after the siren against Essendon in 95 from the Noble Stand.
It was almost the same spot where I saw TGM take 7/52 against the Saffies.

Grrr. As good a reason as any to knock the stand down.
(BTW I also saw Warnie's 7fer from there)
I only hope they continue to call the replacement the Noble Stand.

Seriously some of these stands should be protected under heritage legislation.

True. Certainly at the SCG.
The MCG was always pretty grotty and soulless so the changes have just made it clean(ish) and soulless.

good idea...esp for little boutique grounds like the scg..
By contrast, the G's stands have been built and torn down many times - yet the atmosphere of the G will always be both electric and hallowed...it truly is a scared site not just for Victorians but for all Australians.

Bit by bit, the charm and uniqueness of cricket grounds around the world is being chipped away. Soon every ground will be a soulless concrete jungle. In Aus, only the Adelaide Oval, and perhaps Bellerive retains any kind of charm these days.

I still mourn the loss of the Sir Les stand at the Gabba.

The SCG Members and Ladies stands are preserved AFAIK.
At the MCG, concrete cancer got to the old Members stand. If it had been preserved under legislation, it would only have been there to look at, not to be used. Not a great idea to have a 100 000 seat stadium with 10 000 or so seats unable to be used.

Didn't know that. Good show if that's the case. Horrid waste of space, crowd wise, but somethings need to be off limits.

Re: SCG's Noble Stand to get $60m face lift
Its not like the old members stand at the MCG was nice to look at. In fact it was an architectural abomination. What I don't get with the MCG is that they have spent approaching a billion dollars in the past 20 years and the capacity has gone down.
Also, standing at the back of the great southern stand you can't see the scoreboard. If the front part of the stand above had been built just a metre higher this would not be the case. Its not as if it would have cost any more, that metre could easily have been absorbed into the 100 metres of seats and hospitality rooms above. When you start with a blank sheet of paper and a motive to maximise the viewing experience of the audience how can this kind of thing happen?

How many times a year is the MCG full to capacity? I'm guessing twice? Ie the AFL grand final and boxing day. The rest of the time it's a bit of a waste, really.

Can't find a link to the concrete cancer thing for the members stand, but remember hearing it at the time.

Full to 100 000? Not often. AFL GF Day would be it.Henry wrote:How many times a year is the MCG full to capacity? I'm guessing twice? Ie the AFL grand final and boxing day. The rest of the time it's a bit of a waste, really.
More than 2/3 full (ie 66 667 or more) quite often. The 2009 AFL season alone saw around a dozen games with that many. And a bunch more over 60 000.

It sometimes sells out on Anzac day and occasionally for other AFL games. In a ground this size an extra 2 or 3,000 seats and standing room for 5 or 6,000 more shold not have been hard to incorporate. The shortage of tickets for the participating grand finalists is a controversy every year. The extra people would also bring in about $1.5 million which wouldn't be long about paying for the extra seats and concrete.

The MCG is over-rated IMHO. It's a PR stunt that vomits swallow every year.
