Re: Films you've watched recently.
Shutter Island. Hmmm.
Very well made. Excellent acting, cutting (the hacks were surely deliberate), cinematogrphy and filming, etc.
But it was a cheat, really. That is, you could explain all the various unresolved inconsistencies in presentation and plot by claimin "ah, all a dream, mate!" A bit like the "NSR getout" on this forum.
btw, whyy LedaEdis? One "e" too many, surely?
Taglines for the film that come to mind:
"And you think you've ot problems."
"Seinfeld it ain't .."
"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me."

Taken's a deceptive film. First 20 minutes had me convinced it was gonna be shit, then Neeson ripped that shit up. That's the kinda justice the Gusman's talking about. 82% rapeage, 14% murderous rapeage and 4% undistilled 'i'm gonna royally f*ck you in the ass'-age.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
Belatedly watched (most of) TROY
How camp can you get? Lisping public-school types. Eric Bana and O Bloom in particular reminded me of Nicol Williamson in his pomp. Not so much Horace and Paris, as a pouting Cedric and after you, Claude. A lot of plot enfeeblement, too.
Ridiculous "one man slays 200 in half a minute" choreography, too. Almost as bloody silly (and camply auto-erotic - "look at me and my gorgeous pecs, dahling") as "300".
On the plus side. Brad Pitt is always good. Not a convincing charismatic leader with his whisper and retrousse' little nose. But sinister in the field, and a certainn aura as a warrior. He never acts badly, even in a disaster area of Wolfgang Petersen's multinational-compromise making.
Peter O'Toole had the right bearing, the royalty where many of the others were poorly-acting low-slung chavs/bogans.
And the horse was good, in a "Wicker Man" (original version) way.
Lousy, lousy sentimentalising low-grade soundtrack.
Brendan Gleeson wasted.

taips will be pleased with your review, JKL. I bagged it a few months back as the attack of the killer space prawns, who get beat down and get fed cat food.

Just got back from seeing Four Lions. Funniest terrorist comedy I've ever seen.
Seriously though, it is brilliant.

Do you mean the 1964 Cy Enfield film? Though filmed in SA it is more Welsh as it was a co-production by Richard Burton and Stanley Baker although most of the participants in the historical battle were English, not Welsh (the British Army did not recruit on a geographical basis or use geographical names for its regiments until the 1880s) - one of many factual inaccuracies in the film. However I agree it's an excellent film, although extremely politically incorrect and could never be made, or re-made, now, and must rank as the greatest British 'western'.

Watched Synecdoche, New York last night. Really complex but vastly interesting drama about life.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays the lead role exceptionally.

Are you are a professional film critic, Smerky? I get that impression from many of your comments on this thread. Probably a Welsh version of John-Michael Howson.
