Looks like media outrage and fans furore of the no. 1 test side playing only 5 tests against bottom ranked Bangars and NZ till 2010 end has had an impact. I just saw on TV news that BCCI has 'reportedly' requested the SA board to convert the upcoming 5 match one day series into a 2 test/3 one day 'complete' tour. I would be happy if all one days were scrapped for 3 tests but it's a start.
It has also been reported that BCCI has asked the Australian board as well to convert the next round of 7 match JAMODI fest into the same package of 2 test/3 ODI series.
Will wonders never cease? I hope the News channel has got this correctly because it is simply unbelieveable!

I am still recovering from it and have a great degree of difficulty in actually believing it.
Isn't the next round of 7 match series against Aus supposed to be in Aus next year? A short test tour in it's place while desirable will also be high pitched and exciting since winning a test first by either side will be the key.

2 Test series should be for minnows only.

I'm not holing my breath! Just can't believe that BCCI will let go its cash cow ODIs so easily. I had read it in DNA earlier, but didn't believe it.

We will take as many tests that BCCI will give us as we can. The more the merrier. Playing 3 tests over 7 ODIs will be desirable. CA can afford this since this series will work to their advantage and not BCCI which is only obligated to tour as part of the reciprocal deal. I hope CA will propose such a solution.
The Aussie fans here can write to their boards and media and see if they can start a consensus in their backyard.....

I agree. India should not play a series of less than 3 tests with SA.

There is always hope Chandan. Right now fan response to the dying test game is suddenly high with us being no. 1 and has sparked an interest. The pressure and criticsm on BCCI in not puttting in more tests to help us stay on top is pretty immense at the moment. Perhaps there is a God after all! Even I have doubts if we will atually see this, but there are sufficient media reports to suggest that it might happen. We can hope can't we?

It doesn't take a common sense to know that a top ranked team, a team ranked no. 1 will be more sought after for playing matches against other good sides and that more revenue making deals can be signed from broadcasters and sponsors for the sideshow events. BCCI will only benefit if they use this to their advantage.....

A slight correction: It seems Aus is touring us next year before we play NZ at home for the 7 match fest. So the BCCI will need CA's co-operation to turn it into a 2 test/3 one day deal.

There's a responsibility on the touring teams to push for an adequate Test match element too. It's easy to blame the BCCI but the other boards are pretty quick to chase the money and go for ODIs over Tests as well when they tour.

It would be most ironic if both the SA/Aus boards did not for push for the 2 test series in the least [though 2 tests against top sides does sound lame] and yet went all hog in ensuring participation in IPL and T20CL...

well, atleast then they would not run around the world accusing the BCCI of being the most mercantile and pedestrian cricket body anywhere.

That was exactly my thinking....
England and Australia are probably the two boards who are most pro-Test cricket, but England have certainly chased the money on tours to India, why else would they go on ODI only trips?

Re: BCCI finally sees sense in playing more tests!
I don't think piling on more tests is the answer. I think the frequency if anything is a problem. Although, if the reason for more, is to kill off Twenty20-slogathons then I'm all for it.
However, I'm sort of with the idea that should Test's should be preserved and the entertainment value should be maintained. I like the idea of making Test cricket seem as MAIN EVENT as possible. The quality of Test cricket is still there, but just looking at the bare stands is a worry.
How many Test series does say England have each year compared to the 1980s/90s?

Good news, if true.
More Tests. F*ck everything else. Yeah, the other forms are important to get money into the game and need to be played. But f*ck 'em all the same.

They need to be played in moderation and not as overdose at the expense of all things.

T20s are important, in the sense they help seed new talent into the sport.
T20s has it's own dynamic as a 'talent crucible'.

Like 'talent' is needed in a game where one needs to hit around, get lucky and survive not more than 10 overs at best?
