Impending death of IPL
Actually on a break in India at the moment, but am so excited about all the crap that is coming out about IPL / Modi and BCCI and could not resist logging in from my cousin's PC as a one off.
If there is already a thread my apologies, then treat this as an excess from somebody who never wanted the IPL and had penenially demanded more transparency and accountability from BCCI.
Looks like BCCI will be paying a high price for this mess. The allegations against Modi are incredible ranging from insider trading. black money, match fixing, bogus setups in tax havens, dodgey Forex deals, jobs for the boys / family etc.
Leave it you to google the filth as it is unravelling out here. Will get back upon my return from holidays.

I thought Modi being a big crook was just one of those you took for granted like Catholic priests being into sex with the kiddies.
Are any of these accusations of any consequence?

Re: Impending death of IPL
Modi, one tumor of the system is sort of gone, however the underlying cancer which is BCCI is still there. Until the BCCI gets reformed, made more accountable and transparent and the nexus with politicians is broken these tumors will keep coming. Before Modi it was Dalmiya.
As far as IPL goes for three years the majority Indian public have been naive to not smell a very rotting carcass. The press went along with them for the ride. The passion of the common Indian fan man who will buy dog poo for big bucks if endorsed by his hero was exploited to the hilt. Interestingly the whole IPL was just BCCI's response to the ICL. But Modi turned it into one of the most corrupt institutions of recent Indian history, probably only next to the Harshad Mehta's stock exchange scam of the early nineties. Sadly many of the smarter intellectual fans also went for the ride under the false pride that the IPL was India's first brand to dominate the World. That did not help the cause to untangle the IPL webb earlier.
Many more skeletons are set to come out including criminal charges and match fixing scams. Understand that up to 27 players of various nationalities are under the IT scanner.
Modi was only a symptom. If BCCI think that they have sacrificed Modi and it is Business as Usual then they are wrong. However they could be justified given the naitivity of the fans and the media which does not want to miss the hype.
Nothing short of a full BCCI reform will fix this problem, that and also the need to strike the right balance with the international calendar.

Re: Impending death of IPL
From the Fairfax press this morning (bolding is mine):
How could no-one have seen this kind of shiutfight developing in a competition like the IPL? Oh, hang on, I think quite a few people did...ST LUCIA: Cricket's anti-corruption tsar has tendered his resignation to the International Cricket Council just as the game confronts its most serious integrity issue in a decade.
With Lalit Modi suspended as Indian Premier League commissioner amid corruption allegations - and with a disputed report from India's income tax department supposedly implicating 27 players, including a ''famous Australian'', in spot-fixing at last year's IPL - cricket faces its greatest tests since the banishment of international captains Hansie Cronje, Mohammad Azharuddin and Salim Malik on match-fixing charges.
The Herald understands that Ravi Sawani, the chief investigator of the ICC's anti-corruption and security unit, has handed a resignation letter to his employers. His move comes as Paul Condon, the ACSU's long-serving chairman, prepares to retire in June, leaving a leadership vacuum in the unit. Condon's replacement is expected to be named within a month.
Sawani's resignation is not linked to the scandal engulfing Modi and the IPL, but rather a disagreement with ICC brass. Nonetheless, the timing of his departure could scarcely be worse, with cricket fighting to maintain the faith of a public stung by match-fixing controversies in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Security officials fear there has been a dramatic rise in spot-fixing - engineering outcomes within matches - since the advent of Twenty20. Illegal bookmakers, whose activities were slashed after the formation of the ACSU in 2000, have been emboldened by their advances into Twenty20 and have been seen in increasing numbers around team hotels and functions.
Two Australian players were approached by illegal bookmakers during last year's tour of England. Team managers reported the approaches to the ICC.
The ACSU did not oversee the 2009 IPL tournament after directors claimed its services were too expensive. India's income tax department has since denied naming corrupt players in a report to the country's finance ministry last week.

Any whispers (and not the ones that qm3 hears) about who the famous Australian is?
Roy appears the most likely since he has shown in the past he doesn't give a fark about the game and needs drinking money

you're obsession with all things Indian is flattering, but that's crossing the line. The Ganges is sacred to Hindus.

To be fair - thinking a river is sacred does make more sense than worshipping a "virgin".
