The Australian has reported that the CA board will this week discuss a domestic tournament of 40-over games, with each team to bat for two innings of 20 overs.

In effect, the format would resemble two Twenty20 matches played back to back, although wickets lost and runs scored would accumulate over the full 40 overs. The existing 50-over FR Cup is likely to be played at the start of the upcoming Australian summer with the new competition, if approved, set to take place in the new year. "

This is the latest SA format

Reducing the competition to 40 overs per side was all part of an attempt to speed the game up and make it more attractive to the paying public. Other important changes included allowing the batting side to decide when to take the two five-over power plays that had to be completed by the end of the 35th over and the use of a “rolling substitute”.

This effectively allowed both sides to use 12 players during the course of the match although only 11 could participate at any one time and allow the nominated substitute to play a full part when he was on the field as batsman, bowler or wicketkeeper.

I've always thought the 4 innings one day experiment was worth a go.

Meh, they can't fark it up any more than it's already farked up. I'm with JKL - let's see what it looks like.

It has been trialled by County second elevens this season. It's worth a go especially when the ball is likely to do a bit for the seamers first up.

Do we have to extend the pain of T20 to a longer duration?

Don't think it's that bad an idea. At least it would allow both teams to bat/bowl in similar conditions. It might lessen the effect of things like the dew factor.

Think SRT had a similar idea a while back?

Agree fully.... made all the easier these days with floodlights.

A bit for everyone .. just so long as the innings change-overs and intervals are restricted to 15 minutes each and the D/L method is re-adjusted accordingly to incorporate all 4 innings as a whole.

I find the idea of 4 innings one day matches a lot more appealing than normal 20/20. Obviously the imbalance of batting>bowling would still be there but it would allow for a few more twists and turns.

Looks like other countries are following England's lead in dropping 50-over cricket. Will next year's World Cup be the last one played under that format?

Interesting to see how this goes when it is trialled and also the return of the substitute, which could still work if it is better thought out than the previous experiment in ODIs which was massively in favour of the team batting second who could replace a bowler with a batsman midway through.

I hope that the 20/20 world cup is eventually only played once every 4 years. I mean it's great that England won it of course but if it's played every year then they were bound to luck out at some point, would be more meaningful if it were played less often.

I guess when things settle down there will be either one or two World Cup formats, a T20 and maybe still a longer one, and it/they will be every four years with perhaps a secondary multi-nation tournament (ICCCTT20?)

It could all depend on where domestic cricket/franchise leagues get to though. It may be that something has to give in the international calendar.

Then what's the point then? It would be just like a 40 overs a side game but with more unnecessary breaks in play.

My proposal was 25 overs per innings but meh! I'm pleased to see them innovating. The current 50 game is a dull as dinner with 8 lawyers and a couple of sh1t shifters.

What about 5 overs each, 8 times over?

Not the way, it's been trialled over here. For my sins, I actually watched the "climax" of one of these games.

The only issue is that a lot of games would be over by half-time. Whereas traditional ODIs aren't usually over until 2/3rds of the way through.

Still, worth a shot - it's not like they could stuff the game further

South Africa dropped 50 overs some time back and the substitute was re-introduced last season

Got some ink work done on his right arm ...the one with the infected elbow that caused him to miss some T20 Gilly games ...after he got back from the T20 Gilly ...and his infection hasnt fully cleared ....
