After a moment of unusual sense, rank stupidity rules again
Last week the South African Minister of Sport acknowledged that the quota system has failed and that development at grassroot level was the answer (it took a member of the ANC almost two decades to realise what was obvious to most of the rest of us right away)
Yesterday he said: “The indaba acknowledged the challenges and limitations with regard to the implementation of the quota system in its current form and the negative effects of this system in deepening racial polarisation,” Mbalula said.
“To this end, the indaba observed the unfortunate and painful stigma imposed on young black athletes and players as a result of the application of this archaic system.”
And then they decide to keep the quota system anyway...
Quotas will stay

And they will continue to deny that a quota is in place when the national side is selected.

How much would Philander's success have swayed their outlook?

He was picked on merit. They were probably pissed off by the fact that he was not as black as the player who competed for the same spot: The ANC don't rate coloureds much, and vice versa.Big Dog wrote:How much would Philander's success have swayed their outlook?

And don't forget that Tahir is classified as a honorary white.

Funny that. The worst racism I've ever seen has been propagated by non first world people.
Talk to a Vietnamese about a Thai, different tribal groups in Africa or even closer to home full blood Aboriginals about "yellerfellas". I've often felt safer in third world cities because I was white and not a shade of dark.

There was a period in the 1980's when the Afro-Caribbeans clearly ruled the West Indian roost, and there were consistent complaints from West Indians of other racial origin (Indians, mainly) that they were marginalised as a a result of fairly blatant racism.

Black on black xenophobia is a huge problem in Southern Africa.
I once read a passage by geneticist Steve Jones on a lecture he gave at the University of Botswana. The students were delighted to discover there were really few differences between them and those racist whites down south. Then they were horrified to learn this meantthat there were also few differences between themselves and those lowly Bushmen of the Kalahari. Jones remarked that he felt a certain despair at this reaction...

Bright fellow, that Jones.
Witty too. If scientifically heartless on occasion.
