Re: WI v SAf, 3rd Test, Bridgetown, June 26-30, 2010
Missed all the fun yesterday but from all the narrations above, I don't see it as something racial. Probably more a P2P with aggression and counter-aggression. Taunting and laughing after a batsman has been given out, if I remember right, is an Aussie trend and Steyn seems to take to it.
Bad day for the Windies with just the KO punch missing. Pity the slack umpiring, mainly by Davis, has taken such a toll on this match. I'm not sure that the referral rules are adequate to ensure a just result. IMO, standards set by the ICC for the elite umpires is BS. They need a panel to pick the panel. And passing appropriate audio-visual tests should be a part of them with at least a one-year probation period as a pre-requisite for entry into the elite panel.

It can get worse. I once heard a commentator almost swallow his mike at a rugby match between South Africa and France when one of the Frogs casually whipped out Monsieur Guillaime and relieved himself in the corner of the field. Apparently none of the French thought anything of it.Merlin wrote:horace wrote:bit likethe englishworld soccer eh merls?
Fixed.
Spitting is a religion in soccer the world over 'orace...not just the EPL.
It should be erradicated from cricket.

Phurt, my earliest memory of such a trend was watching Tony Greig at his sledging best. So I put it down as an Anglo-Saffie trend.jim rich wrote:Missed all the fun yesterday but from all the narrations above, I don't see it as something racial. So another unfortunate result for the Windies.
Well played to the SAffies.

Steyn got MOTS. The sub-editors have had fun with punning on the spitting incident. There was no way Kallis was sacrificing his wicket in the quest for quick runs to polish off the target, he was totally intent on survival. He was also involved in a stoush with Roach.

Steyn is amazing!
Unfortunately he deserves a ban and should probably be banned for the Pakistan series just to give Pak an outside chance ESPECIALLY in absence of M Asif...

Piss poor effort by Steyn. Hopefully he'll get what's coming to him.

Re: WI v SAf, 3rd Test, Bridgetown, June 26-30, 2010
I just saw both the Steyn-Benn incident and the Kallis- Roach incident in full. Benn was chipping away at Steyn as he does, probably being half joking, half insulting, but nothing can justify spitting at someone, and what Steyn did was a disgrace. He should face some sort of ban- test match ban. Not just a few meaningless Jamodi's against Zimbabwe or whoever. Benn should receive a fine and suspended ban. He is a persistent pest, and has no respect for any kind of rules or authority.
The Kallis- Roach incident was purely Roach's fault. He was carrying on like an immature kid, and for the most part Kallis was keeping his mouth shut until Roach said something that prompted kallis to respond angrily. Then another time Kallis walked past Roach without saying a word, and Roach looked puzzled, before thinking of something to say and then chasing Kallis with words again. Really immature stuff. Roach should lose his match fee. No punishment necessary for Kallis, just a warning.
This isn't the first time i've seen the Windies act like this- All 'fired up', and aggressive when a test match is all but lost. Why don't they ever show this passion when the test is still in the balance? It's so silly, and asks serious questions about their characters.

Idiocy aside, Roach looks quite a talent.

Yeah Roach, Barath and Darren Bravo are the real deal thankfully. It's about time, we need some light at the end of this ridiculously long tunnel.

But as I said, why did it only come with South Africa needing 40 to win? Where was that aggression when the test was still alive as a contest?

Looks like Steyn received a fine of 100% of his match fee.

As for Roach, his last spell was impressive but you can't just save it for when you know you only have to bowl a small number of overs and on a deteriorating pitch at that. Still he and Barath if he can regain full fitness, look the brightest young stars on the Windies horizon.

Ridiculous by the Saffies. 9-0 wasn't enough they have to have a bit more ?
This could be a serious tit for tat situation if the ICC aren't careful because WICB would be well within their rights to report Kallis for 'provoking' West Indian batsmen and carrying on like a grumpy old man throughout the series.
I hope common sense prevails and they leave the charges as they are tbh.

It's because Benn apparently charged into the SA dressingroom and threatened their players.
He's certainly a recidivist.

Obviously if that is even close to the truth then I hope Benn gets banned for a considerable length of time. I'd like to think the match referee would have done more if it was true though.
Of course I have long had my doubts as to the competence of ICC match referees from the botched handling of Graham Smith's behaviour towards Bravo in 2005 (which the West Indies team to this day feel aggrieved about) to Chris Broad's general bias, to Sir Clive Lloyds incompetence, they have proven a sorry lot.
