England v Bangladesh, 2nd Test, Manchester, June 4-8, 2010
There's talk of England playing 5 bowlers in this match, with one of Mahmood, Shehzad, Woakes, or Tremlett coming in.
Personally, i'd love to see Tremlett given another go. He has all the attributes. I know he's injury prone and there are questions about his ticker, but the more tall, quick bowlers we have going into the ashes, the better imo.
It'll probably be Shehzad, however, based on the fact he was selected in the squad for Lord's. I don't really know what they see in him. He loked decent in the few matches he played over the winter, but I can't see him running through the Australian lineup come November. He's a bit like Bresnan only he can't bat quite as well. Interesting.

Damn ... hadn't realised that.
Let's hope he's back in time for his Ashes preparation.
Oh well ... would have to be Bressie then ... whom I'd only pick in a 5 man bowling attack but never as part of a 4 man attack.

I wouldn't pick Bresnan at all, but I don't think we have a choice now that the decsion has been made to rest Broad.
If you had said to me this time last year that Bresnan to Watson on the first morning of the first test at the Gabba was a possibility, I would have said that you were certifiable - it's not entirely impossible though, even though Bres is IMO a very limited bowler and shouldn't go to Oz.

I think he could be a very decent 4th seamer - no way in hell should he be leading a test attack though.
They'll probably pick Shazhad - don't really see what they see in him myself.
I'd pick Woakes, though if they're looking for a bit of pace and bounce Tremlett is a possibility I suppose

Bazza -
Aye agree ... Bressie's only only in because Broad is rehabilitating ...
(very sad news about Broad's Mum incidently -and quite possibly another reason to rest him) ....
I'd still stick with Bres in a 5 man attack ... of say Jim, Finn, Broad, Swannie and Bres - as I genuinely believe there isn't another decent quick around (other than Onions and yes ... possibly Harmie) at present.
Taking one rookie quick to Oz (Finn) is sufficient - any more 'L' plates and the knuckle draggers' eyes lght up!

What's the point in playing Sidebottom against the Bangers? We wont learn anything that we don't already know. Questions that could have been answered- How is Tremlett bowling- 88mph with bat jarring bounce? Has Saj Mahmood turned a corner? How good is Woakes? How quick is Meaker?
But we go and pick Sidearse, who can barely get through 4 overs in a T20 before he's out of puff.

I thought Scotsmen always travelled by train & spent the entire journey in the bar.

Or locked up in the toilet for the entire journey in fear of being nobbled by the ticket inspector for not having bought a ticket.
Anyway - Lever claims not to be a Jock ... more a Chav emigre to Jock-land ... which has to be the worst option !

Wouldn't matter if the rooky duckies had an old head on young shoulders (and were good ..) In fact, Oz's (over-)confidence is usually Pomgolian opportunity.
The problem is not Autralian perceptions, but rather as I tried to put it on the Bolters? thread, I think.

Meaker was quick when I saw him, nice action.
Shorter than Harris but I guess you'd rather height or pace, right?

I would rather height AND pace. It can be done..... Harris isn't outrageously tall. About 6'2? And he's around 82-83 mph. Bresnan like......

Agree with the old head on young shoulders analogy Petey - but to test the theory out (more newbie quicks) in Oz is asking for trouble!
Another reason to hold back on blooding newbie quicks out there is the tendency for captains to underbowl them, depending as they do primarily on the tried and tested ... viz Jimmie, Sibo, Harmie (if he goes, though doubt he's a Strausser fave) leaving the newbies to do occasional fill-ins - at which point, if they're flogged to all parts, then it bodes ill for them as the match continues.
Similar vein to what Watto can expect from the likes of KP and Colly when he trundles in at Brisbane.
Personally, I'd restrict it to just Finn for the moment ... unless miracles from other possibles emerge ... it's the spin twin for Swannie that will pose a problem ... I honestly cannot see Monty going .... he's a busted flush now I think ... so maybe Rashid will get his turn at last ... again, he too has to bag some wickets aplenty before he gets under the spotlight.

England might not need 5 bowlers on a pitch that usually has bounce and turn - but maybe it will be a chance to test out Alakazam.
