There's a department of education in every state. A department of health in every state. And Federal government departments for both. There's transport as well. Heaps of it, h.

And why do we need different police forces in each state? OK, sure, the NSW police force gives corrupt coppers somewhere to go, but there's another one.
The states, other than for sporting purposes, are an expensive, outdated, redundancy.

The best thing about federalism is that it ensures the army and the police are run by different people.
It may not seem important right now, but it's a division of power that helps keep societies free in the long run.

Re: The Australian Federal Election 2010 Thread (III)
Abbott is making big mistakes since the election.
First his election night speech sounded like he was claiming victory.
The once it became clear it would be a hung parliament. It can be suggested he was gunning for another election straightaway. He instead should have been trying to form minority government.
Then it appears he is handing this election to labor because he feels he can succeed in the next election which he hopes will be within a year. One there is no guarantee of an election in a year. There is every chance that turnbull will take over. There is a slight chance labor and gillard can turn labor's fortunes and standing around.
And not only that the real tony is showing, such as the costings black hole. And the way he recklessly offered wilkie a billion dollars to fix hobart hospital with no evidence of where this came from shows political stupidity. I still maintain that this is Abbott's best chance to be prime minister. He is not grasping this opportunity with both hands and he is bound to regret it.

Farkin' lying qunt Queenslander...
Father lied over disabled son and helped sink Labor MP
Courtney Trenwith
September 3, 2010 - 9:41AM
Labor's Jon Sullivan lost the seat of Longman, north of Brisbane, after holding it by a 1.9 per cent margin.
Mr Sullivan made national headlines two days before the election when he questioned why Robert Murphy would wait two years for his disabled son to see a specialist.
However, it has been revealed Mr Murphy was far from honest during the radio public forum that led to the debacle. He apologised today and said he was sorry if his deception had influenced voters to ditch the Labor party and back the Coalition's candidate, Wyatt Roy, who won the seat to become the youngest parliamentarian in Australian history.
Mr Murphy said his family had not waited two years for help, as he claimed.
Mr Murphy went on ABC Radio this morning to explain why he lied.
"I thought it was [two years]," Mr Murphy said.
"I mistakenly said it happened over two years.
"I didn't plan [the question], I didn't think it through properly. I shouldn't have said what I said."
Mr Murphy said the time period was his only fib and his son, Bailey, did have a disability for which he had waited to seek help.
When asked if he accepted he may have contributed to Mr Sullivan's loss, Mr Murphy apologised.
"If I am blamed for it, I do apologise. But it wasn't my intention," Mr Murphy said.
He said he did not mean to embarrass Mr Sullivan.
"I just needed a bit of a hand, not only just for my son but for hundreds of other people that are the sort of similar situation where they don't know who to go to or who to turn to to get help, to make sure that they can get help for their children.''
Labor had reportedly expected to win the seat of Longman, believing age would count against him at the polls.
Mr Sullivan's response to Mr Murphy drew immediate scorn from the audience and made front page headlines the following day.
"It's taken two years to take my son to the doctor to get him diagnosed because we don't have the money to actually go and pay a specialist ... so that he can get the proper help that he needs at school," Mr Murphy said.
Mr Sullivan replied: "What parent would wait two years to get a child who they believe has a disability ... "
Mr Roy won the seat with a 3.87 per cent swing.

Sorry should've made the sarcasm more evident. The kid admitted his favourite reading was 'Victoria's Secret' catalogues. He's not even smart enough to go for the tradies vote by saying he's only interested in low grade trash like 'Picture'.

I usually like watching Insiders on a Sunday morning, but couldn't be bothered today. The independents have sucked all the fun out of this election and it started with such promise after the Night of the Long Knives.

Claims of his 'twenty points' the Coalition scored better. Also said if Rudd was still leader he wouldn't have even had to think about it, he would've gone with the ALP.
It's actually a quite amusing press conference.
