And they be virgins too. That'd suit three guys who will be able to carry on like eastern Potentates for the next three years.

Sorry can you please explain how the ALP might only end up with 72?
Thanks

Because the AEC employees are ASU members.
At any rate - I don't think it is out of the possibility that we could be back to the polls within the next month - a 76 majoirty with the help of independents doesn't sound stable for a federal government - might be OK at a state level - but states don't really control the economy.

People are now talking a national Govt of Unity.
Only slightly more loopy than Turnbull serving in a Gillard cabinet and Rudd vice versa.

.
Makes as much sense as anything. The TAB manages to do far more complicated calculations almost instaneously and the it has been able to train westie pinkos, qlders and other challenged groups to fill in those tickets

Why don't we just vote via Foxtel on Sky racing just after the last in your state. Then we have a result in about 2 hours and the rest of the Election TV event could be turned into Factional Ultimate fight night!

Aye. We've had the ability to do online voting since we had a national TAB.
Would make election nights less intesting though so the TVs wouldn't like it.

Re: The Australian Federal Election 2010 Thread (III)
A good idea. A ten year old kid can hack Pentagon files, but let's vote online.
Voting via the TAB would be better. Only slow talking hicks, dole bludgers or those who have some experience of the real world would know how to use the system.
The ALP would be a shoo-in.
On a more serious note. The big issue from this election is the first order of business once parliament sits is to amen the Electoral Act to ensure there is never an even number of HoR seats.

Isnt it even because the Speaker comes out ?
Should the speaker be an "independent" appointee rather than a member of the HoR?

I believe that's the case mb.

And that may be the answer to the conundrum above. I was going to have a bitch about the speaker in my post but got distracted before I sent it. Constitutionally I don't think we could swing a non MP. Though a constitutional amendment might pass to appoint as speaker some suitably qualified person from outside after a joint sitting. Said appointee to have the same sort of tenure as a High Court Judge.

Back in the 1980s my father actually oversaw a tender to introduce voting via the TAB in South Australia.
There were some bods in the government and the state electoral commission who liked the concept, but the majority ended up getting cold feet.
The idea was that results would be calculated electronically but that a paper trail of TAB tickets had to be available for hand recounts in close or disputed races.

The major issue would be that they couldn't afford to have TABs off-line (or partially tied up) on a saturday. All elections would have to be held on Good Friday

Most certainly.
It would require a change to the constitution, but it would do wonders for our democracy.
Have an indepdent speaker appointed by a 2/3 majority of the House and ratified by a majority of 100 electors chosen at random, a la jury duty.
Such a process would ensure the speaker has bipartisan support. The ratification process would ensure we avoid the two major parties handing out "jobs for the boys" or taking a "my turn, your turn" approach.
I'd give the speaker a fixed five-year term. They could be removed through a process of impeachment identical to the one in place for High Court judges.
I'm sure such a proposal would pass at a referendum. Australians usually vote down referendum proposals because they seek to give the government/politicians more power. A truly indepdendent speaker would instead be weakening the government's power over parliament.
