You can do if you want, JGK. I was putting the list together when you posted your "fark it, I'll do it." Just thought I'd help out with the table. I've gotta run anyway.JGK wrote:G.Wood wrote:Faulkner & Schwarz Saf v Oz Sydney 1910-11
This doesn't work. JGK asking the question is as silly as Ron Jeremy directing a movie - what's the point of having him if he's going to be behind the camera
IT was more like RJ was directing the movie but got pushed out of the way by Johnny Holmes and now RJ is just watching from the green room waiting for the scene to finish so he can be in the next scene.

This is interesting. I found one that doesn't count but Graveny and Murray put on 220 odd for the eigth wicket, then Higgs and Snow put 125 for the tenth. And they still couldn't win.
Well they didn't lose but Christ cricket must have been really boring back then.

Don't worry about it. Just tracked down the scorecard and they came up one run short. SCG 1885. Tell me one thing. Is most of this list between 50 and 100, because the only list i can find is 100+ and apart from Wasim's effort I can't find one that matches the criteria.

Dizzy and the drunk at Kandy in '99. And wouldn't you know there's about five of the highest 8th wicket partnerships in 1999.
Klusener and Boucher look to have done it twice, not achieving the 50% though.

Erm, no I won't, qmy. I have the list.
And I agree with JGK - none of your stabs other than Drunky and Diz are on the list. Bonnor and Jones was very close at 49.84% for their 154/309 - GJ Bonnor (128) & SP Jones (40) - Aus v Eng Sydney 1884/85.
Updating the latest.
8th wicket Test partnerships of >50 worth >50% of total (not necessarily all out):
57.47% - 100/174 - GA Faulkner (62) & RO Schwarz (61) - SAf v Aus Sydney 1910/11
56.91% - 107/188 - RT Ponting (96) & JN Gillespie (41) - Aus v SL Kandy 1999/2000
56.60% - 313/553 - Wasim Akram (257*) & Saqlain Mushtaq (79) - Pak v Zim Sheikhupura 1996/97

?
54.19% - 246/454 - LEG Ames (137) & GOB Allen (122) - Eng v Aus Lords 1931

51.07% - 119/233 - MJ Prior (84*) & SCJ Broad (48) - Eng v Pak The Oval 2010

And who can forget that game that featured Drunky and Diz's partnership? It was the match that Dizzy and Tugga crashed into each other going for an outfield catch in the Lankan 1st innings. Tugga smashed his nose and Dizzy broke his leg. We lost the match (just) batting two down in the 2nd innings. We drew the next 2 Tests v the Lankans and then went on the fabulous Streak I - winning 16 consecutive Tests.
And according to JGK's clues, 3 of the remaining 5 partnerships are less than 100 (and I agree).

Errr, not quite. England actually beat the Windies by an inns & 34 within 4 days for their only win of a series they lost 3-1. Having sacked M.J.K.Smith after the 1st Test at Old Trafford when England had been spun out by Lance Gibbs (as they had 3 years before) after devastating hundreds by Hunte and Sobers the selectors sacked Cowdrey after England's third loss at Headingley and recalled Brian Close after 3 years to captain the side for the first time.
The Windies were shot out for 268 on the first day but England were reduced to 166-7 before Graveney and John Murray, recalled as wicketkeeper after 3 1/2 years in place of Jim Parks, got together to put on 217 before Ken Higgs (the only England player to appear in all 5 Tests) and John Snow got together to put on 128 for the last wicket, just 2 short of the then Test record of 130 by Foster and Rhodes at the SCG in 1903, before Higgs chipped one back to Sobers' cousin, David Holford. (11 years later Higgs was also to put on 228 for the last wicket for Leicester against Northants at Grace Road with another member of the England side at the Oval in '66, Ray Illingworth).
The Windies were then shot out for 225 with Sobers being dismissed for a duck with a catch by Close at the silliest of short legs off a short ball from Snow (the first of three ducks, I think, that Sobers incurred off Snow). It was the only time in the series that the Windies didn't make 350+ in either innings. They had a batting line-up that consisted of Hunte, Kanhai, Butcher, Nurse and Sobers.
288 runs were scored on the 1st day (Thursday) for 11 wickets, 310 runs were scored on the 2nd day for 6 wickets, 362 runs were scored on the 3rd day for 7 wickets and 90 runs on the final day for 6 wickets with the result. Bored? I could hardly keep awake!

That's all very well, AD, and as always very interesting, but what about the missing 8th wicket partenrships that made up the majority of the team's total?

Apologies, skulls, very off-topic, I know, but 1966 was the first Test series I followed so it was a case of a trip down Nostalgia Lane when the sun always shone (not really) and England always seemed to be trying to avoid the follow-on (in my blissful state of ignorance about the noble game at the time on the rare occasion they achieved this extraordinary feat I thought they had won the match - I was swiftly disabused however). I was not distracted by some football competition going on at the same time. For me The Oval '66 was my Wembley. Bored? I could have wept!
Anyway, Bradders always manages to get a rise out of me but I promise to try and not divert your excellent thread again.

Do 2nd XI matches count? If so, include Johnny Maclean & Rodney Hogg who put on 60 out of a total of 116 at the 'Gabba against England in December 1978. I'll leave you to do the math.
