Exact sort of pitches warne took wickets on year after year as well.
He just had that ability to make something happen on dead tracks that would turn a match on it's head.

Let us not forget that Warne had McGrath at the other end.

Aye pdy, Warnie would've taken a bag of 4-fer-not-manys on those two decks, such was his control and variation.

Re: A tale of two spinners.....
Macgill had quicks taking wicket in this match as well.
Also warne's best ever series was when mcgrath went down injured in 05 and he was a one man show.
Without mcgrath we would have won less games but warne would have probably taken a lot more wickets as he would have had too.

Not sure about that I would say that the leash McGrath had from one end often helped Warne grab some cheap wickets.

I just don't buy that, on pitches like this warne was able to dismiss well set batsmen through skill, it's not like they were so frustrated by mcgrath they just started smashing warne long hops to the fielders.

MacGill bowled absolute shit yesterday ....fulltossathon ...the bowlers at the other end were keeping it tight and it didnt make any difference ...The Nein commentators were making injury excuses for him this morning

This article (no I'm not a Crash fan) sums things up nicely. Warnie better than Chuck

Yep, that's been my take all along. Compare them in SL and Aus and Warne is the winner by a long way.

Re: A tale of two spinners.....
Skully I wasn't making excuses for McGill. Warne had the ability to extract wickets from seemingly flattish tracks which McGill does not seem to pocess. Simply pointing out that bowlers hunting in pairs normally tend to help each other.

No matter how much the seamer at the other end helps you have to have a special talent to take bags of wickets as a spinner on australian tracks.
that's what puts warne into a class all his own.

Re: A tale of two spinners.....
i would rather my team face warne than murali. both great bowlers but murali did seem like dominating indian batsmen. warne not really, he seemed to pick up a few wickets if the quicks did their job
one can only imagine how dangerous murali could have been with the kind of back-up warne had. i guess it depends on who you ask the question to

Yep, Murali is more dangerous than Warne from an Indian perspective. At least 5 Indian bats Sachin, Azhar, VVS to a high degree and Sourav and Sidhu to an extent had Warne's measure.

If Murali had that kind of back up, he would have far less wickets.

Re: A tale of two spinners.....
It was pretty obvious that MacGill wasn't fit.
How much of that was injury and how much of that was old age?
That second innings was by far the worst I've ever seen MacGill bowl at any level of cricket.
I won't write his career off just yet, but he needs to be given a rigorous fitness test before he's picked again.

Agreed he wasn't 100% fit, but if it was the knee then surely he's done at this level anyway?
it's not going to suddenly get better.

"If Murali had that kind of back up, he would have far less wickets."
We saw in the last two weeks what happens whan MM bowls without back-up. He gets two wickets, the other hacks get two or three between them, the batting side's captain gets the six left over when he declares with 4 or 5 down.

Re: A tale of two spinners.....
What this thread is saying...
Shane Warne is a top Aussie. He is also a massive pisstank yobbo with a beer-gut who dyes his hair blonde and drives a red convertible. Warney has done some bad things. He once got paid 100 grand by Nicabate to give up durries for a year but he lit up heaps when he was pissed. Then he took money from some Indian bookmakers for pre-match information. He once smashed a camera cause a kiddy took a photo of his beer gut. Then he got toey on the phone and dirty-talked an English girly who wasn't his wife. However, all Australians agree that Warney can be excused for doing these things cause he spin bowls like a genius and makes England look completely shithouse. Warney could drink all our beer and then spew on our carpet and we wouldn't care as long as he keeps taking wickets.
Warney is a top Aussie.

Sounds fairly representative.
