Re: The Commonwealth Games
The problem has been corruption and organisation, due to appointing the wrong people for the job, rather than their being an absence of ability to put on such an event
Can someone please shift this to the Forum Gold department please.
Trev, you're a feckin idiot.

but the way these games have been handled has been a sham (and if you are a bit nationalistic also a shame). if the venues and the village were all ready 6 months ago, as scheduled, then the issue of a ceiling collapse (its one board of a false ceiling, not a catastrophe) or unclean toilets could have been dealt with in time. thats why people try and finish projects well in advance. so that you have enough time for testing, etc
now with things being rushed more than ever before do not be surprised if a shoddy job is done and more accidents happen. i have a feeling the games will be cancelled. it would be a better option than possibilities of accidents during the event. which is a real shame, since the venues for the events themselves are very very good and the people of delhi were ready to warmly receive many guests
in the end it might not be a bad thing. this will put more pressure than anything else on the government to make some systemic changes
One of your better efforts TO. Carry on.

So athletes have a choice of having a dog sh!t on them in their sleep, have a bridge collapse under them, have a roof fall on them, or get shot or blown up by terrorists. I bet they can't wait to get there.
You forgot the health risks like Dengue fever Skully.
Why was India ever given the games?
Three top-line British athletes have also pulled themselves out of the games and there are now doubts surfacing re. the whole event going ahead with Scotland, Ireland and NZ considering not going.
In fairness Christine Ohuruogu and Lisa Dobriskey are injured. The third guy might just have pulled out anyway.

Re: The Commonwealth Games
Not that anyone British should really be pointing and judging as we all know the 2012 Olympics will take place in an incomplete, rickety, tin shack that'll be blown up by terrorists (or a light breeze).

It's uncanny how, whenever there's evil abroad in the world, there's a Britisher lurking about who's responsible.

I was banned on the old C4 forum at one stage for daring to criticise India's ability to hold a major sporting event.
Then again, I did use a line about spectators having to stand knee-deep in their own excrement.
Perhaps I should have said that about the competitors instead...

It'd be quicker to list the things you weren't banned for saying on C4.

From Furry's Linky ...
Nice name
Delhi chief minister Sheila *sh!t* attempted to play down the seriousness of the bridge collapse. "These minor glitches do happen," she said. "Something maybe dripping, some tile may collapse, it doesn't mean the entire Games are bad."
*sh!t* said the authorities had decided not to rebuild the bridge and would instead create a new path for the spectators to enter the venue. She confirmed that compensation payments would be made to those hurt in the bridge collapse.

Yeah, maybe Fromage could loosen up a bit about the auto-censoring he implemented. IT's taken her name and made it offensive by implication.Sheila *sh!t*

Re: The Commonwealth Games
From http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/09/22/3018287.htm
Noicethe head of the English team, Craig Hunter, has revealed the scene at the athletes' village.
"It's just not satisfactory... the place is, you know, the toilets and what have you are clearly a mess," he said.
"But there are other significant issues as well. The air conditioning isn't working, there's flooding, doors have been hung in an incorrect manner, so a shower door that's supposed to open outwards, opens inwards so you can't actually physically get in.
"The hot and cold water feeds are reversed. There was a drain pipe from one of the adjacent towers with no downpipe and the water just gushed straight out of there and straight into our tower.
"We've got 10 people, 12 people on the ground now and we're donning rubber gloves and cleaning toilets,

Re: The Commonwealth Games
Part of me wants the games to be cancelled so that it may serve as a catalyst to root out some of the institutional diseases that haunt India. The nationalist in me wants it to go ahead and be successful. I guess the nationalist wins at the end.
Nevertheless I hope this fiasco paves way for reforms towards more accountability and transparency. CWG makes BCCI look saintly, that says something.

New Delhi: Organising the Commonwealth Games is like holding a “Punjabi wedding” -- things will be done at the last moment but all will end well. That is how Union Sports Minister M S Gill has described preparation for the biggest sporting event in the country.
