I never see the point in these 14 a side games. Much better to have 11 against 11 solid first class cricket with first class averages at stake.

Our amazing strength and depth of bowling resources looks somewhat less amazing at the moment.

Sidebottom and Hoggard should go pretty well on these pitches.
I remember on our last tour there we didn't have McGrath but Gillespie and kaspa did pretty well by just keeping it tight and bowling plenty of cutters and slower balls.

I reckon it'll be tough for him coming back to SLs pitches. But he'll most likely get one before the end of the 2nd test.

It's probably the best time to take on sri lanka at home.
Sanga and the skipper hit some runs but pretty much everybody else had a very average tour to Australia.
if England can handle murali i think they can get on top of Sri lanka early as Sri Lanka must be rock bottom confidence wise right now.

Harmy's boots did not arrive until round about tea-time. Presumably the bag containing his brain is still at Heathrow.

Bit of a farce these 16 aside, I can't bowl because my boots are in Dubai, games.
Still dare I whisper it- maybe Monty isn't the messiah. Got tonked here, didn't do much against India in the last series, not great in the Ashes. Tufnell with a turban?

Didn't do anything in Australia? He got a five-fer in the first innings at the WACA and then was hampered at every turn by Fred's lack of experience captaining spin bowlers.
Also, I can't off-hand think of a spinner India haven't demolished in the last few years. Even Warne had his well-documented struggles against them.

Monty will be fine as long as he doesnt trim his beard. I think he's got a kind of 'Sampson' thing going on....

As things stand, it should be Broad, Hoggy and Siders who line up in the first test alongside Monty.

I think monty's a pretty good bowler.
he was over hyped early but he's still a very good prospect.
But you can't expect a sla to put up warne/murali numbers game after game.

Exactly, the S/L batsmen went after him as though they were on a mission. But, I think Monty is made of sterner stuff than to be roughed up in a warm-up game.

If Fletcher was still coach then Monty's performance in this warm up game would have been a convenient excuse to shelve him for the series.

I assume he's injured?
He's over rated - end of.
Oh, sorry, I forgot ... permutate any two from the following ...
He's ... not fit yet / lacking match practice / missing home / boots have gone AWOL / action not quite right ... yet / umpires don't give any tolerence / the heat / the cold (surely he has a sniffy nose) / missing Fred / Colombo Curried Colon / he's crap / the wicket's a pudding .....
Yawn ...............

Re: Sri Lanka Cricket Board President's XI v England XI
I suppose the batting line-up is of some interest in this game.
Ian Bell came in at three - promoted three places after finishing bottom of the batting averages during England's last Test series.
Good to see we're no longer rewarding mediocrity.
And I had thought they were leaning towards Bopara to bat six and bowl some overs during the Tests, but he only got one over and has come in at seven behind Shah, so perhaps Ace is just in the lead in the race for the final batting place.
That said, he's crabbing along at the moment, while Bopara is going at a decent rate, so who knows?

I don't think this retiring out malarkey is going to work during the tests....
