On target now.

So I took the kids to play putt putt yesterday, one of the of the boys nearly gets a hole in one and my 8 year old daughter says "Nice Gary".

Did you get a chortle and a high five from any nearby cricket-loving strangers?

I was with a mate is a cricket nut who knew what it meant.
My daughter of course has no idea other than it is a "thing".

She could have meant Gary Player

Henry wrote:You often hear the stories about him being a club cricketer who was working as a groundsman, and suddenly thrust into first class cricket, and when you see him play you can tell. Not because of any lack of ability, but he just doesn't look like the typical athletic, groomed Aussie cricketer. He gives off the impression that he's a club cricketer who's been mistaken for someone more important and has suddenly found himself bowling in a test match for his country, but is happy to go along with it.
If you think back to the close finish of the Wanderers test, most international number 11 batsmen waiting to bat with 10 needed to win would be trying to look cool and calm, knowing the cameras are on them, but Lyon looked like he was dead-set sh*tting himself. It was honest and real, and frankly quite funny.
He wont always be successful, but the new Aus selection panel should stick with him for a while.
Unsuccessful at his most recent outing, but I think we'll stick with him.

Done OK v India too.
Brass Monkey wrote:Yeah, I don't mind Lyon. Gives it a bit of a rip, not afraid to give it a bit of air. Haven't seen too many good changes of pace yet but he's relatively young. Hauritz is probably better, though.
The better Nath.

Fairly thin-haired, I'm sure RD meant ... bloody auto-correct.

He can’t catch a throw in from the outfield... that’s a good reason to like him.

Indeed, from your perspective.
Following Stokes' amazing achievement, it's comments like this that seem to reflect a feeling that you've won the Ashes back already.

Amongst a really bad roll call of bad cricketing nicknames, Gary would have to be at the top of the list. About as much sense and imagination as any of horries.

Re: The 'Reasons to like Nathan Lyon' thread.
Not at all, our selectors’ complacency and short-sightedness (along with Jimmy’s injury) has put you back in the driving seat. They seem to think we can roll through on momentum while carrying several passengers. We just have to enjoy our success and Australian cock-ups/bad luck while we can...lardbucket wrote:Indeed, from your perspective.

Re: The 'Reasons to like Nathan Lyon' thread.
Not sure how Lardy attributed short-sighted cocky complacency to beamer there. When that's foreign to his nature. (And he inveighs against stubborn stupidity of the selectors often enough.)
Hardly needed beamer's clarification, surely? But there you go.

I like his off field affable nature. On field he is Cricket's 3rd worst judge of calls for DRS. (Tim Paine is the 2nd worst. Watto of course is peerless)
