Re: The 'Reasons to like Nathan Lyon' thread.
How far up the all-time wickets list will he get? Set to sweep into the top ten very soon as he passes the group in the 430s of Hadlee, Herath, Kapil and Steyn. A potential head-to-head race with the still active Ashwin. Is Walsh a bridge too far?

Re: The 'Reasons to like Nathan Lyon' thread.
You'd think he'll overtake Hadlee, Herath, Kapil and the notoriously over-rated pie-checker within 5 Tests. His record looks remarkably similar to Harbhajan's in terms of strike rate, average, and economy ... and probably will remain at that level without ever competing across those parameters with the others in the top 10. He and Ashwin may end up with a similar wicket tally, but I doubt either of them will quite chase down Courtney Walsh.

Re: The 'Reasons to like Nathan Lyon' thread.
Could be an epic race to be most prolific off-spinner of all time. Lyon is a year younger, Australia probably play more Tests and India have a habit of randomly leaving Ashwin out on occasions, so the force with Gazza on that one?
At 4 wickets per Test he needs to play around 19 more to reach 500 and 23 to catch Courtney. He does hold the record for most wickets @ over 30 now, having overtaken the Turbanator!

May have been wrong about him chasing down Courtney; it’s in sight if his fitness and form continue. No immediate challengers in sight although Murphy might rival him by the next tour of the UK.
One more Test wicket in Adelaide and he’s taken more there than Warney or any other bowler.

I think 12 months ago I said he would struggle to get far past 410, so best I stay out of this discussion

Re: The 'Reasons to like Nathan Lyon' thread.
35 now. Still, Herath was only just getting started at that age, after waiting for El Chucko to step aside…
Had to check the “most wickets after age 35” stats after writing that.
Herath 233
Anderson 192
Grimmett 192
Warne 181
Walsh 180
Kumble 154
Barnes 139
Murali 126
Hadlee 116
Gibbs 100
Ceiling is still quite high on that evidence, even Apple’s within reach…

Love this photo. The moment Elmer's 500th Test wicket was confirmed. Look at the unabashed joy on all his teammates.
