Re: The Batsmen's Decade
All the talk about better drainage systems etc to get more play into a day is simply offset by the FACT (as peterg pointed out) in the past a lot more overs were delivered in a day that now, anywhere up to 120 overs in a day's play.

it makes sense that more of the current day tailenders are likely to give chances to the slips and the keeper
I think tailenders actually trying to protect their wickets (and actually consistently scoring more runs) is also one of the factors in the higher bowling averages these days. Not only are there fewer out and out bunnies these days, it is really common for No 8 and No 9 batsmen to have averages of 20+.

Once again, a trend England have singularly refused to embrace. We go with bunnies from about five down. Keeps it interesting.

I think that our tail (with the noble exception of Hoggard) don't take their batting at all seriously. Bob Willis was a complete loon with the willow, but he once put on > 100 for the last wicket with Peter Willey - and that was against the 1980 Windies. Anyone reckon Monty, or Anderson could do that?
I think there's at least one test match 50 in Harmy struggling to get out, but he doesn't appear to have the application.

But then again tests in England were played over 3 or 4 days prior to the war.

Isn't the problem not that they are bunnies but that they don't work hard enough on their batting?

Trouble is, they haven't been doing well enough at their bowling to spare time to concentrate on their batting.
