A gunman who killed three Iranian indie rock musicians and injured a fourth person inside a Brooklyn apartment before killing himself was upset because he had been kicked out of another band last year, police say.

Ali Akbar Mahammadi Rafie killed himself on the roof on Monday after struggling with a member of his former band, the Free Keys, police said. Investigators believe a guitar case found on an adjoining roof may have been used to carry the assault rifle used in the attack.

Rafie, 29, "was upset that he wasn't in the band anymore", said New York Police Department spokesman John McCarthy. Investigators suspect the shooter and his former Free Keys band mates may have had an argument over money, he added.

Two of Rafie's victims were brothers and members of the Yellow Dogs, a band that came to the US from Iran three years ago after appearing in a film about the underground music scene there, according to band manager Ali Salehezadeh.

The third person killed was a musician but not in the Yellow Dogs band, Salehezadeh said. The person injured was an artist, he said.

It wasn't immediately clear why Rafie opened fire on members of another band, although musicians in both groups knew each other and some lived in the same building, Salehezadeh said.

Rafie knew his victims, but he hadn't spoken to them in months because of a "very petty conflict", Salehezadeh said, declining to give specifics.

"There was a decision not to be around each other," Salehezadeh said. "They were never that close to begin with ... This was nothing. We thought it was all behind us."

The four victims lived in a row house in East Williamsburg, an industrial neighbourhood home to mostly warehouses where artists can rent cheaper space than in trendier parts of the city.

The rampage erupted shortly after midnight on Monday when the gunman climbed down from the roof to a third-floor terrace and opened fire through a window, killing 35-year-old Ali Eskandarian.

The shooter then killed brothers Arash Farazmand, 28, in a third-floor bedroom and Soroush Farazmand, 27, in a second-floor bedroom while he was on a bed using his laptop computer, police said.

An unidentified tenant was hit in the arm before Rafie and his former band mate from Free Keys struggled over the gun until the clip fell out, police said. Rafie put the clip back in the rifle, went back to the roof and shot himself in the head.

The gun was found next to the body. Kelly said it had been purchased in upstate New York in 2006 and police were investigating its history.

Two members of the US Coast Guard who were staying in a rented room in the apartment weren't harmed.

The Yellow Dogs played recent gigs in New York at indie rock venues like the Knitting Factory and Brooklyn Bowl. Originally from Tehran, they were the subject of a 2009 film, No One Knows about Persian Cats, which told the semi-fictional tale of a band that played illegal rock shows in Tehran.

The band came to the US to pursue its dream of playing rock music in an open society, Salehezadeh said.

"They were great kids who people just loved. They looked cool and they played great music ... They wanted to be known for their music. Now we're not going to get to do that."

The two members who were killed were a guitarist and a drummer who had just received political asylum. The bass player and singer weren't home at the time of the bloodshed and weren't harmed.

Retired police captain held in Florida shooting; texting sparked spat

It was supposed to be a rare afternoon off for a Florida couple who put their young daughter in day care and went to see the matinee of the recently released military flick, “Lone Survivor.”

Instead of violence staying safely on the movie screen, Chad Oulson, 43, and his wife, Nicole, 33, became trapped in their own horror in the audience that ended with the husband shot to death and a retired police captain facing murder charges, all from a dispute about texting, authorities said.

Curtis Reeves, 71 and a retired Tampa police captain, is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday, according to the Pasco sheriff’s office. Reeves is facing a charge of second-degree murder, accused of shooting Oulson in a movie theater in Wesley Chapel, Fla., about half an hour outside Tampa.

The theater has a policy of not allowing weapons in the auditorium, Molly McFerran, a spokeswoman for the theater told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday. There are signs on the walls with drawings of guns and knives with a heavy red slash. There are no metal detectors or searches, she said.

The situation began on Monday afternoon as about 25 people were waiting for the 1:20 p.m. start of the movie at the Grove 16 Theater. Oulson and his wife in one row and Reeves and his wife in the row behind.

Chad Oulson began noisily texting his daughter and Reeves asked him several times to stop, Charles Cummings, who was siting nearby, told reporters at a televised news conference Monday. Voices began to rise in anger.

“Somebody throws popcorn. I'm not sure who threw the popcorn. And then bang, he was shot,” said Cummings, a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War, who wanted to see the movie as a birthday treat. His son, Alex, came along.

“He said, 'I can't believe I got shot,'" Alex Cummings, said of Chad Oulson. “There was a lot of confusion.”

Charles Cummings said Reeves pulled out a gun and fired. Authorities said Nicole was injured in the hand and Chad in the chest.

“I can't believe people would bring a pistol, a gun, to a movie,” Cummings said. “I can't believe they would argue and fight and shoot one another over popcorn. Over a cellphone.”

Cummings said the injured Oulson fell onto him and his son.

“Blood started coming out of his mouth,” said Alex Cummings. “It was just a very bad scene.”

While Alex Cummings went to get police help, another patron, said to be a nurse, performed CPR. Both Oulsons were taken to a hospital where Chad was pronounced dead.

Reeves retired from the Tampa police as a captain in 1993 and had worked a private security guard since then.

After the shooting Reeves put his semiautomatic handgun on his thigh and was detained by a Sumter County sheriff's deputy, also there to see the film about four Navy SEALs on a mission in Afghanistan.

“He ran into the hot zone,” Sheriff Chris Nocco told reporters, calling the deputy a hero.

“Fate brought these two people together,” Nocco said. “This was ridiculous.”

The original NYT report about the Florida theatre shooting had something along the lines of- it sparked debate about the use of smartphones in public places. It was quickly edited out.

The two most ban-worthy things in the world - guns and smartphones where they don't belong i.e. places where their use will shit everyone around them.
