Actually what you said is that there is nothing wrong if people like that get tortured.

I guess it might help us find some permanently bent arms.

Thats NOT what i said. Thats just YOU'RE interpretation. What i said was that the majority of "asylum seekers' from Sri Lanka are not genuine.

The war in Sri Lanka may be over, but many Tamils are still facing persecution.

We did a story on Lateline a couple of months ago which mentioned people being "white vanned" ie. a white van rolls up, the person gets hauled inside and then they are "disappeared".

http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/2013/s3858229.htm

So there are fair dinkum refugees fleeing Sri Lanka, unlike many of the Iranians in this story published in the New York Times Magazine, who, despite their crappy living situation are clearly economic migrants.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/17/magazine/the-impossible-refugee-boat-lift-to-christmas-island.html?_r=0

It's two American journos who went through the whole people smuggling process, posing as asylum seekers. In doing so they were able to get on a boat that made its way to Christmas Island from Java earlier this year.

It's long, but a terrific read.

Nice argument but you're on the wrong forum. Quoting from the ABC won't wash with a few who make Bolt lookk rational.

Just in the ad breaks in "Scandal". The viewer comments seemed to be mainly from the extreme ends of opinion, their entertainment value not withstanding.

Meanwhile:

An Australian Customs patrol boat had to rescue about 40 asylum-seekers at the weekend after accidentally ripping the bow of the boat away and causing it to start sinking.

Multiple sources have told Fairfax Media that the patrol boat was trying to tow the fishing vessel when it damaged the front of the vessel, causing it to take on water.

The fishing boat's engines had stopped about 20 kilometres off Christmas Island but it is unclear whether Customs was at the time of the incident trying to tow the boat back towards Indonesia or to Christmas Island.

The incident happened on Friday night and the asylum-seekers were offloaded at Christmas Island on Sunday morning.

Gordon Thomson, a Christmas Island councillor, said the passengers had been brought in and disembarked in secret at Ethel Beach rather than the normal drop-off point at the main jetty.

A spokesman for Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has not responded to requests for information on the incident.

The 40 passengers are understood to be from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Late on Tuesday morning, Labor Senator Kim Carr asked Customs chief Mike Pezzullo about the incident in a Senate estimates hearing.
Mr Pezzullo said he was unable to give any information, saying it was a matter for Operation Sovereign Borders, whose commander Lieutenant-General Angus Campbell will face the hearing on Tuesday afternoon.
The threat of turning boats back to Indonesia when it is safe to do so has been a highly controversial plank of the Coalition's border protection policy.

Labor has argued that the practice can never be safe because of the poor condition of most asylum-seeker vessels and the risk that the passengers and crew will deliberately sabotage their own boats.

People should get off Morrisin's arse. He'd only be duplicating the work of the Christmas Island Daily Bugle by giving out the truth on a more regular basis.

People who believe that all asylum seekers are genuine probably also still believe in Santa Claus. The term Asylum seeker has become an automatic 'graball' for all illegals. Australians have a right to feel aggrieved at these people. They have enough money to travel half way round the world & then pay thousands to criminals to get them here where they have the expectation that the Aussie taxpayer will provide them with a living, in many cases, for the rest of their lives.....fark 'em. As was quoted recently, Australia is a sovereign country, not a registered charity.
