Re: Clarke: Hughes a 100 test player
He could be caught between the almost retired and the next big things. He wouldn't be alone in that club, though he's played more tests than most of them.

A fair point, H. I can only hope you are right if Fuse does get another go on the back of Pup's urgings.

So we're all in agreement. He hasn't changed a thing. And Wessels isn't a good case in point as his only tech fault was the inability to score at better than crab pace when targetted on the leg(?) side.

Sourav Ganguly might be a good player for Hughes to copy. Ganguly had his weaknesses outside off stump, but realised that the off side was also his strength so just went for his shots out there and took the rough with the smooth.
Of course, Ganguly also had the ability to murder spinners- An ability that Hughes doesn't have.

It's where the voice of a Dubber media commentator is put over the words of every other State commentator. Â Âlardbucket wrote:Dubbed?

Have to consider other states, esp Wozzies.

FMD, just noticed Fuse made 243* in the recent 4 day game v SAf A. Only 260 overs so obviously time lost to rain?
Anywho, classic Hughes. Does fark all in this series then makes a big one after Pup bigs him up, as if to say "yeah, look at me, I'm grouse as".
Qunt.

The Dubber press can say what they like about him, but until he strings 3 good innings together in every 4, instead of the current 1 good innings in every 7, I'll rate him "barely Shield-worthy".

He'll still manage to score a few hundreds against India. He could edge every ball to second slip and they'd not catch one of them.
That should buy him another 20 tests

Geez Trev, I'm not a betting man, but even I'd be prepared to wager a lobster with you that he won't. He currently averages 32.65 and I cannot see him improving that with his unchangeable technical deficiencies.
You win that wager, skully.
Well, most of us on here didn't rate him much as a batsman. His biggest supporter was possibly horrie. The old bean hasn't been on here all day. I hope the news hasn't hit him too hard.

Saddest of circumstances to achieve the "won't improve" jibe.
I trust the good forum community realises that none of the banter from forummers levelled at the tragic Phil Hughes was aimed at the man himself. Clearly he was a top bloke, as evidenced by the massive outpouring of grief at the young man's demise.
Vale Phil Hughes.

Yeah, the fact someone's not your favourite cricketer for whatever reason doesn't mean you have anything against him as a person. And even those we dislike as characters based on what we've seen reported, still nobody would actually wish physical harm on them.

Well, looking back through this thread it seems I was the most positive about his future. I look at his average of 32.65 and think that just doesn't do him justice. He never got the chance of a Steve Waugh or a Matty Hayden to rectify that. The sense of promise unfulfilled adds to the feeling of loss. I know losing a cricket career is nothing compared to losing a life, but it's part of the reason it hurts to much.
Also, I think I may have been the sole person backing Johnson this time last year. Which isn't to say I would have been right on Hughes as well, but the track record is there

Re: Clarke: Hughes a 100 test player
Feels in bad taste to criticise Hughes now, but he did have his opportunities and didn't utilise them, or was found out. If he had turned out to be a hundred test player, I think Australia's batting would've been in a bad way for a few years.
His demeanour off the pitch, judging by what's written by pretty much everyone from ground staff to team mates, and on the field were outstanding.
