Clarke: Hughes a 100 test player
"I think Hughesy is a really good example of someone who continues to score big runs," Clarke told ABC Radio this week. "Look at his first-class record, he's probably got more hundreds than any other player at his age. He's making runs consistently for Australia A, so I think he's doing everything he can to be in the front of the selectors' minds.
"His performances speak for themselves. He's got a bright future. He's a 100-Test player in my opinion. He's just got to get an opportunity now and I'm sure he'll grab it with both hands. But I think in 10 years from now, we'll be talking about Phillip Hughes as one of those players to play 100 Test matches for Australia. He's got the talent, he's got the work ethic.

He's only doing everything he can to be in the front of selectors' minds, including failing.

Re: Clarke: Hughes a 100 test player
I'm a 100 Test player. Doesn't mean I'm worthy. The man's a walking Test wicket, last time I checked.
Re: Clarke: Hughes a 100 test player
Must admit, though, that sounds very 'Alastair Cook' of him. By Jupiter, most cricketers are as self-aware as Alan Partridge.
Re: Clarke: Hughes a 100 test player
He's already managed 26 Tests ...our batting cupboard looks bare so when Rogers Clarke and the school girl go he'll get another opportunity ...he'll MEW/schoolgirl a score whenever he looks like getting dropped and will murder SS attacks when he does get dropped to scrape through to 100 Test
A depressing thought for Oz cricket

So by this rating, Warner is good for 200.

If ldw gets dropped he'll fark off and become a t20 merchant rather than smashing shield attacks

It's possible. Does he have a Zimbabwean grandparent?

I can see him slashing and edging his way to a career average around 40, cashing in on flat pitches against the lesser attacks, but struggling consistently against England and South Africa.

Geez Trev, I'm not a betting man, but even I'd be prepared to wager a lobster with you that he won't. He currently averages 32.65 and I cannot see him improving that with his unchangeable technical deficiencies.

I'm sure if he comes over here next year he'll experience a Mitchell Johnson like resurrection and average about 90.

Re: Clarke: Hughes a 100 test player
I'm going to back Clarke on this one.
Hughes has a lot of talent. Steve Smith looked like a bigger walking wicket than Hughes and he has ended up making it as a Test batsman.
I'll back Hughes to have a successful career (averaging over 40) if he can ever get an extended run in the team at the right time. 100 Tests might be going a little far, but I can certainly see him getting a fair number under his belt.

I did say he'd cash in against the LESSER attacks. As usual, a decent, probing pace attack will find him out. And quality spinners will stifle his run scoring in the Sub Continent. He'll make runs against the Bangers, Sri Lanka, and maybe the Windies.

So basically if you take out that one debut series against South Africa where they clearly hadn't done any research as to where to bowl to him, he averages around 25.

Re: Clarke: Hughes a 100 test player
Aye, basically it was beginners luck by a rubbish one-shot player against a dumb attack.
He'll end his career with a pretty decent 1st Class record but a carp Test record. I sincerely hope he doesn't get to add too many more to his 26 Test tally.

Re: Clarke: Hughes a 100 test player
To have a 100 test career he has to do a Kepler and work out a way of combating bowlers probing away at his weakness. As skulls pointed out he doesn't appear capable of this.

Re: Clarke: Hughes a 100 test player
I still think he thinks he's alright. I reckon, like many-a cricketer nowadays, he's been fatted up by sycophantic articles from hack journalists. Certainly didn't seem to allude to anything else in the last article I read (admittedly that was a while ago). Seemed to think he could just play as loose as he wanted because 'that's the way I play'.
Re: Clarke: Hughes a 100 test player
For some reason he has always had the majority of the media on his side. (Spiv media anyway) Whenever he is out of the side he is immediately touted as the next player in line to go back in

Most of the media have always been Dubber-centric.
The Age is probably the only exception with significant circulation.
