Re: 2008 Australian Tennis Open
Bit of a joke that late start really. The men certainly earn their pay in the open.

Was a great match though. Brilliant comeback by Baghdatis, was too good to be true though.

power to her and all that. but not won a tournament of note (or even reached a final) and that too in women's 'sport'. give me a break
I suggest you stick to cricket
There are reasons she has not made the elite yet.
she had some glaring deficiencies when she started on tour. for instance her serve was barely decent in 2005 and she suffered a lot in 2006. you are not likely see even a mediocre american tennis player with that horror second serve.
the cost of a decent tennis coach is prohibitively expensive and not affordable to most indians. yes she has spent a few weeks time with brett and roche. but that does not compensate for years of sub par training.
in short she is working on some things many other juniors from coutnries with better sporting records would have done years back.
but she has some serious gifts, that even the current top players don't have- the exceptional forehand and the willingness to invent incredible shots. Do not forget people with lethal forehands usually are at the very top since its so important in tennis
but her supporting cast like the startegy, serve and backhand has to be of better quality than current to do more damage.
she will be late developer and still has some significant weaknesses to work on but someone you may want to have an eye on.

Re: 2008 Australian Tennis Open
she will never make the elite. she's a woman
like i said i am happy for her, but i hate the media using her as a stick to beat some proper elite sportsmen, and that too with no success of note
and she really needs to work on her fitness. in an era of super-fit stars you cant get by with a body like that

Re: 2008 Australian Tennis Open
Just got from Melbourne for the weekend of tennis.
I'm still on a high from the atmosphere.
My tip, Nalbandian, gets thrashed. And then Gasquet doesn't produce the goods.
Now it's up to Blake, but he meets the FedExpress at the QF stage.

Nadal is a cert - the courts are slow enough to put in back in his favour v Fed.

BTW Ponts - did you see any of Tsonga? He impresses me greatly. More weapons than any of the other Frenchies.

Unfortunately I didn't see the Gasquet/Tsonga match.
Yep, I agree with you about Nadal.
It's amazing that if Federer lost in the 3rd round, he would most likely have lost his Number 1 ranking.

Re Fed's ranking - I don't think that can be right can it? He would still have had 2 Slams and a RU on his 12 month points tally.

Actually you're right - if he had lost, Nadal would have taken No 1 by making the final.

i don't get you. what does she being a woman has anything to do woth her future potential? she has parents who are willing to support her all the way.
and fitness is important to her in the same way its important to other sportsmen. but its tennis related body mechanics that are more important.
but she does not rely on build and her movement will be always be limited. she is a effortless timer of the ball. if she plays the "big babes" game of william sisters she would be a cropper . her game is about timing,a natural tendency to go for it and exquisite bio mechanics.

exquisite bio mechanics.
That's right in sooooooooo many ways.
I can't grudge her her popularity because of the things she gets put through in India, from fatwas to ridiculous court cases.

women's sport is not elite sport. thats all i am pointing out. its a bit like youth sports or special olympics
sania would not be amongst the top 5 tennis players in india, not top 500 in the world
