I can remember Eng V India in 1967 and what I believe to be JSE Price bowling at the Aussies in 1964.

Ouch. I wonder if anyone on FB can go lower/higher
I remember Walters' debut century in 1965 being on the news, but because Test cricket wasn't televised in Australia until 1970-71 my earliest clear recollections of a series are the radio calls from the 1968-9 Australia v West Indies series, which was a massive run feast.

Hmm, yeah that's pretty damn far back actually. But I suppose horold can remember the Roman's playing, so it's a relatively short way back.
Re: Nathan Lyon ...not long until he breaks an Oz record
I can remember snippets of Oz playing NZ in the early 70's
The 74/75 Ashes are when I got totally interested in Tests

Mid to late 70s for me. WSC really although I was aware of Lilian Thompson before that.
First test attended was SCG 82-3.

I can remember attending Aus v WI at SCG but was too young to appreciate the gravity. I "got" cricket leading up to the 70-71 MCC tour. Really loved sitting up late with my old man listening to John Arlott & Alan McGilvray on ABC radio when Aus toured in 1972.

Re: Nathan Lyon ...not long until he breaks an Oz record
I remember watching the six o'clock news in 1964 & hearing mention of Bob Simpson's triple century. The next recollection was listening to commentary of the 1965/66 series on the radio with my father.
My first experience of watching cricket on television was in 1967/68 when I saw the Australia v India series. That season, I also watched the Sheffield Shield matches from the Gabba & Qld vs the touring New Zealanders. Back then, the local ABC would telecast the final session of all Gabba games.
The first match I actually attended was a Sheffield Shield match in 1969/70. Unfortunately I had to watch Bruce Francis batting.

I also remember listening to the sports show at 6.30pm on ABC radio. They had scorecards & comments from all Sheffield Shield matches & I would copy them down. I must have started doing that in 1965/66 because I remember writing down the scores from a Queensland innings when the batting lineup contained Bull, Burge, Buckle & Bizzell. Because I didn't have time to write the full name, I just wrote the initial. My father would then ask me which "B" made which score? Usually, I couldn't remember.
It was even worse when I wrote down South Australian scores over the next couple of years. They had teams in 1967/68 containing Chappell, Chappell, Causby & Cunningham. And in 1966/67 Favell, Farrell, Freeman & Frost. That's right a South Australian team containing lots of F & Cs.
Or Effin' Cs, if you like.

The first match I attended was Worcs. V Glos. in May 1968: Graveney and D'OLiveira were playing. It was Glenn Turner's first championship season and Mike Proctor's debut for Glos.

don't really remember anything clearly before that 70-71 series. was at home watching a test on the tv when a couple of missionaries knocked on the door. i stayed glued to the set while everyone else was down on their knees praying. ******

Re: Nathan Lyon ...not long until he breaks an Oz record
oh dear...confession time...
first matches I remember were Shield games v dubbers at the G and a test v the poms in the late 50s when Alan Davidson ripped through their top order...have clear memories of the tied test (radio) and attending the Windies v Oz test on the day when 90k + attended...
like Skully I have great memories of listening to the crystal set (and then, wonder of wonders - a transistor radio) through the night when we took on the poms in pomgolia

Lyon goes past Trimble, only 6 more poles to 150 (should do this the first Test in England). He is in uncharted territory for an Australian off-spinner.

Congrats to Elmer. He now has 4 Aussie leggies in front of him. And he's only 27. Kudos to the selectors on sticking with him.

No he's not. Nor are most spinners.
Re: Nathan Lyon ...not long until he breaks an Oz record
Lyon is a good bowler. Any help from the pitch, and he's in the first rank.

Re: Nathan Lyon ...not long until he breaks an Oz record
The list shows how tough it is to be a success as an orthodox finger spinner (particularly right arm off-spin) in modern cricket, the last 50 years even.
Finding a spin solution has been an almost constant challenge for the non-Asian teams, other than when Warne was the first name on the Aussie team sheet. Just shows how much of a one-off he really was. Though I still can't understand how, when he must have inspired a whole generation of Australian kids to try leg spin, that not even one of them turned out to be any good.

Re: Nathan Lyon ...not long until he breaks an Oz record
If he started inspiring some kids from 1993 onwards, they might just be starting to learn how to do it now!
There have been some promising players - Muirhead etc. None have kicked on to Test standard yet.
The impact of increasing one day and T20 cricket on a leg spinner still learning his craft might be even more negative than has been generally realised.

Bloody auto-correct ...
He went past Trimble when his first ball landed on the pitch.
He has gone past Trumble now, too.
