Re: American Football Thread
Unlike last year, the teams clearly didn’t fancy the QB crop, with only one taken in first 2 rounds. WRs were everyone’s favourite though…

I see Australia’s Daniel Faalele is set to become the heaviest player in the NFL after being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens at pick no. 110.

Buffalo Bills safety, Damar Hamlin, is in a critical condition in hospital after collapsing on the field following a tackle in the game against the Bengals. CPR performed on the field before he left in an ambulance.
Best wishes to the young man.

Re: American Football Thread
How long will it last this time?
Even if he stays away until the start of the season, as soon as the first big-name QB goes down injured the speculation will begin…
Now the question of whether Rodgers follows him onto the golf course/TV studio. That would mark the end of one golden generation of QBs (Peyton, Brees, Big Ben etc.) but we might have another one establishing itself now.

I think it's for good this time.
Rogers will do at least one more year (given he's being paid US$58m to do so).

Chiefs snuck home late v Eagles via a field goal.
Fans did a lot of whinging about the allegedly slippery surface. Hmmm, still good enough for 73 points to be scored.

Maybe the defenses struggled more with it… Eagles didn’t manage a single sack against Mahomes, after near record-breaking seasonal stats.

I freaking missed most of the match because I was in jury duty for the last two weeks.
Managed to sneak in most of the 3rd quarter on my phone at lunch.

The Panthers kicked things off the 2023 Draft in Kansas City in unsurprising fashion, taking Alabama quarterback Bryce Young with the No. 1 overall pick.
He gets a Rookie Contract worth US$60mill a season.

Re: American Football Thread
Not sure that’s right, looks like $41m total over 5 years for the #1 pick as far as I can see. Rookie contracts have been cut back since the old days when they could sink a franchise for years if the player was a bust.skully wrote:The Panthers kicked things off the 2023 Draft in Kansas City in unsurprising fashion, taking Alabama quarterback Bryce Young with the No. 1 overall pick.

Even Lamar Jackson’s league-record contract signed just before the draft is “only” $52m a year average…

Re: American Football Thread
So, the New York Jets star signing Aaron Rodgers plays his first game for them. On the 4th snap, he is sacked, has trouble standing, leaves the field & has a suspected torn Achilles. At his age, that might be the end of his season & possibly career. great buy!
