It's not like Steve Smith would declare 9 down in a d/n game at the adelaide oval to have a few overs at the opposition before stumps

Oh dear. It would be exactly the same number of overs lost in the changeover after the declaration.
FFS, we didn't know whether Faf would have batted for two overs, three, three and a half etc. depending whether or not they declared or were dismissed.
Hedging bets!!!!!!!!!!!!! I figured there would have been about eight left which would have been sufficient to test the Aussies
Semantics, pedantry etc.
As Basil Fawlty once famously said "I could have this argument for the rest of my life!"
Exactly. So why did you reopen it?

The betting sheets on this game would be interesting to examine.
The Fapper is a twice convicted cheat. The yarps have an unsavoury history in match fixing...
Nigel's dismal defence of the declaration bears scrutiny. Did he have bets on the match?
Nigel doth protest too much

Either the fix was in or the Fapper is remarkably stoopid.

Here's a thought provoked by a glimpse at that scorecard ... where is Daniel Worrall? He was 'good enough' to play JAMODIs a couple of months ago, but is now unable to make the Sozzie Shield side, beaten for a place by Sayers, Richardson, and Mennie. Or is he injured? Would he make the Sozzie side if fully fit?

I think you've just encapsulated the reasons that Bacchus resigned.

Sports Science and Sports Medicine Manager John Porter confirmed that Daniel Worrall will miss the remainder of the Sheffield Shield before the BBL break.
"Daniel has an acute flare up of a pre-existing back problem and as such will be unavailable for the next two Shield games," he said.
"His return to cricket will be through the BBL and he is expected to be fully available for South Australia in the post-Christmas period."

Makes sense, because Mark Waugh among others, was talking him up a few weeks ago.

this interview/article was prior to the recent round of games, since there's only 1 more round of Shield before the BBL?
