Re: Football WC 2018
Man, there have been some feeble teams so far, from the examples I've seen.
Two or more of:
> technically below average (esp passing, crosses, trapping/controlling the ball, shooting)
> depressingly negative in set-up and mindset, hoping for luck in a breakaway at best
> persistent fouling (often of the sneaky type)
> "assassinated" theatricals if they manage to make any sort of physical contact with an opponent - or on occasion, even fail to.
I'm all for spreading the appeal of any game worldwide. But at an estimate, at least eight of these 32 seem below decent Finals grade.

There have been some good body-slams in the penalty area, though.

Panama seemed to think that with all of the attention of body slam penalties not being given in other games that it would continue to happen, rather than with all of the attention of body slam penalties not being given in other games that the ref's would probably tighten up on it.
Hilarious hat trick from Kane, didn't know anything about one goal and scored two (admittedly brilliant) penalties.

Was a big result (plus Spain's last minute equaliser). Uruguay are a far more difficult second round opponent than Russia.

England seemingly heading for a R16 clash with Senegal or Japan.
Is this the year?

They have as good a chance as they've ever had. There's no standout so a with a bit of luck the Poms could go all the way. Although out on penalties to Germany in the QF/SF is most likely.

Nah, we've only scraped past Tunisia and beaten first time qualifiers Panama.skully wrote:England seemingly heading for a R16 clash with Senegal or Japan.

It is already a lot more successful than last time though and have had more fun watching them than the last two World Cups combined. If we make the quarter finals then it would be a very successful tournament for us and if we somehow made the semis I'd be ecstatic, last time we made the semis of a major tournament was back in 1996.
I wasn't even sure we'd make it out of the group after last time out so am already happy with how things have gone. Plus Harry Kane's hat trick was the funniest ever (made doubly so by Ronald missing a pen yesterday).

So a pub in Rio is offering a round of free drinks every time Neymar falls down. Soon to declare bankruptcy

Come on Aus. France should beat Denmark which means a win against Peru and you're through.

Re: Football WC 2018
Fark it. Peru score against the rim of play with a crackin volley.
Why can’t we ever score goals like that? Nothing for it now other than for Aust to have a massive crack.

Was always a bridge too far for Aus. In a group with teams ranked 8, 11 & 12 we were on a hiding to nothing.
Still, not disgraced.

It all sounds terribly painful.
Hard luck Oz. No disgrace, as Skully says, but a bit disappointing not to have at least one effective rimming effort on the Inca crack.
