Re: Football WC 2018
Was actually thinking that in 2006 we were beaten 1-0 by Italy in the R16 game, and Italy went on to win it. The same outcome could happen with France - a one goal loss to the eventual WC winners.
Come on England!!!!!!

Re: Football WC 2018
Now now h, no need for insults.
I know the England players far more than the other teams. Simple.
But I like the way Le Bleu play (Mbappe is sweet to watch), so I'd have no qualms witnessing a pretty France victory.

You have me mixed up with the absent tac. He lived in his Mum's basement with her goats.
I'm more the creepy wizened statistician who lives in the attic.

Clearly you have post traumatic stress syndrome. You have repressed all memory of being held captive in the basement with said goats.

Could be, h. I know I am looking forward to a break. The trip to England and subsequent illness was more like a debilitating marathon than a holiday.

Once the knee is good (hopefully late August/early Sept), I'll be doing just that.

Back On Topic, while I have been loving this World Cup, the times of the games are a bit inconvenient.
I've been up most early mornings to watch the late game, then go back to bed. I haven't seen too many late mornings of late. Got up at 1.00 pm today after going back to bed after the semi.

Re: Football WC 2018
Guess most neutrals will be going for Croatia or England as most people seem to despise the French, or as one caller suggested, not trust them.
England vs. France is arguably the dream match-up.
France looked sluggish against us but have been pretty convincing thereafter. It was always said that they're slow starters. Luckily they only had to play us. Their other challenging is hoping all their stars jell.

Re: Football WC 2018
Saw some interesting stats today.
Croatia has a population of 4 million and has 140,000 registered footballers. Aus has a population of 25 million and over 1 mill register football players.
What is Croatia doing right that we aren't??

plus our players get scattered globally chasing dollars and better leagues than the Midweek pub league equivalent that starts with an A

So how does AFL stop a chunk of the million players developing into World Cup competitive class?? Is it because the crowds are siphoned off to AFL, thus depriving football (soccer) of the energy and crowd support to become a great league? Do those "left over" football players after AFL take their share not have the talent to be great footballers? What, what, what?????

Re: Football WC 2018
Are the million alleged ‘football’ players (seems a ridiculously large number) all dedicated round ball players over the age of 12?

I think only 2 of the Croatian players play in their home league.
