Re: New Zealand v England, 1st Test, Mount Maunganui, 21-25 November, 2019
Can anyone pull out a big one for England?
You'd have to think that if Watling (BJ - of course beams - sorry ) and Santner can set a new NZ 7th wicket record, then a couple of England's premier bats can do something similar.

In NZ, England partnership records for the remaining wickets:
4th - 266
5th - 242
6th - 281
7th - 114
8th - 163
9th - 117
10th - 43
Several of these may be needed for England. Although given it's Day 5 any of the top 3 will do.

Surely the little sod Root is due to do something. Time and again he sends a nightwatchman in ahead of him. May be this time the Poms will salvage a draw. Am sure the ECB are scouring the rules to enable them to escape, albeit with their now traditional asterisk.

Only about 32 more overs minimum for Broad, Archer and Curran to tap it confidently around!
England should take the negatives from this one. Sliding ever faster backwards over the course of this Test. A few heads need knocking together, perhaps.
New Zealand have stuck at their task(s) very well, but esp. today they've had way too much help.

Alec Stewart thinks we can save this. Has he ever seen England try to bat out a day to save a Test, even without three wickets down? They won’t get as far as tea.
Bah, you big pessimist!

Make that all out 197. 5-fer to Wagner.
NZ win by 65 runs - and an innings.

Wow, you would have gotten money on the worst of the innings defeats of the three tests this weekend being England's.

And he’s averaging 27 in Tests this year. Bairstow was dropped for a similar run of form. If he wasn’t captain and the previously undisputed world-class batsman in the side, there would be serious questions about whether he still merits his place.taipan wrote:Root:

Of course he’s not alone in that regard, a predictably spineless capitulation with a game to save, but they need to start seriously looking at captaincy alternatives, and maybe even a future as a white ball specialist for Root himself in the not too distant future if he can’t recapture his Test form.

And the alternative to Root as captain is?
Please God let it not be Stokes - do we really want to ruin our best player?
Given that no-one else is assured of a regular place, Root might hang on to the captaincy by default.

But ideally we need Root the batsman back, and losing the burden of c(r)aptaincy might just do that.
Sticking with something that’s not working just because there isn’t an obvious alternative is no reason to do so... some of the most successful captains have got the job almost by accident, or by just being in the right place at the right time when someone else might have got the job a year earlier or later.

That the Snoozies were behind the 8 ball on day 1 and recovered to flog the Opposition in such a crushing manner would have been cause for great satisfaction.
As for Root's replacement, there seems few up to the task. Surely the Thug could not be appointed. Still in a country with BoJo as Bwana in Chief, nothing would surprise.
One thing I have noticed this year has been Root's habit of sending in a nightwatchman to protect himself. I like Jack Leach and he seems happy to do anything for his team.
Assuming the Thug is not allowed in a leadership role, perhaps the Poms will turn to Denly. He is a competent batsman with lots of grit.
Chris Rogers told a funny story the other day about Anderson. In one series jandy kept repeating the same personal and unfunny insulting sledge to Bucky.
Rogers tired of the repeated and boring sledge and at the end of the series over a couple of beers with Jimmeh he asked him why he was so uninventive. Anderson apologetically explained he was not smart enough to come up with something better.

Also, see obvious examples of Botham and Flintoff. ...
I had hopes Buttler might come through the raqnks, but, as you say ...
Burns similarly. A proven successful captain, but England is and are a different kettle of fish. And once again, he hasn't established himself at the top level.

Horrie - a Kiwi for a day.
Did he call him "Specky Foureyes" or something? Or "Bucky"?
Anderson appears someone who feels he has to come across hostile at the wicket, but it's not really his thing, even when playing. He mainly comes across as narked.

Maybe Eoin Morgan should be appointed England's non-playing captain (NPC).
