As for Root's replacement, there seems few up to the task. Surely the Thug could not be appointed. Still in a country with BoJo as Bwana in Chief, nothing would surprise.

One thing I have noticed this year has been Root's habit of sending in a nightwatchman to protect himself. I like Jack Leach and he seems happy to do anything for his team.

Assuming the Thug is not allowed in a leadership role, perhaps the Poms will turn to Denly. He is a competent batsman with lots of grit.

Chris Rogers told a funny story the other day about Anderson. In one series jandy kept repeating the same personal and unfunny insulting sledge to Bucky.

Rogers tired of the repeated and boring sledge and at the end of the series over a couple of beers with Jimmeh he asked him why he was so uninventive. Anderson apologetically explained he was not smart enough to come up with something better.

Horrie - a Kiwi for a day.

Did he call him "Specky Foureyes" or something? Or "Bucky"?

Anderson appears someone who feels he has to come across hostile at the wicket, but it's not really his thing, even when playing. He mainly comes across as narked.

Hardly a Kiwi for a day. They are understandably cranky about the WC . English triumphalism was greeted with derision across the ditch.

Oof, most Zealanders seem pretty cool about the tie that wasn't.

Triumphalism of any stripe or in any (ostensible) cause is an ugly abomination. Pissed is bad enough, sober is almost worse. Not sure even Little Englanders have a patent on it, though. Gloating is corrosive worldwide.

Well yes. I agree triumphalism seems endemic to the human condition particularly in world politics.
