Fleming retires.
I was thinking of heading this thread 'Phlegm spits it'.
Anyhoo, he's announced he'll be pulling the plug after the Pom series.
What if a former international cricket captain retired and nobody noticed?

He was a test only NZ player. Don't know why he even bothered to come out with an announcement.

I hope he can get that test average to over 40. Anything less would not do him justice.

Re: Fleming retires.
Good player and a fine thinker. Probably would be averaging over 40 if he hadn't had to play half of his tests on those dodgy Kiwi wickets.
He'll probably earn truckloads in the Kiwi corporate world if he so desires.

Yeah definitely a good player with a bit of calibre about him. His own fault he got less centuries than he perhaps should've. When he did though, he usually booked in for a big one. Wonder if some arbitrary stat about amount of runs per century would put him up near the top. But for an uber-statter, we'll never know.
Re: Fleming retires.
The closest thing the Kiwi's have had to a world class batsman since Martin Crowe retired.

Yeah... though I'd say Mark Richardson was nearing World Class. I'm not on about his strokeplay or dominance on a match, but the fact is people couldn't get him out easily and his average was 'up there'.
Also thought Astle should've been better than he was.
Re: Fleming retires.
McMillan underachieved as well. Real talent but gave the impression that he couldn't really give a shit.
Taylor and Ryder look pretty good. Perhaps there's hope for Kiwi batting yet.

Yeah, agreed. Thought MucMullun would become a useful all-rounder. Not some Porky pig-face who hits out or gets out and bowls utter sh!t.
Ryder could well be the same.
Dunno WTF Taylor has been doing since his 'blow up' arrival. Disappointed me greatly.

Taylor is pump.. Has been worked out now. Poor technique and I doubt he'll be any more than OK at international level.
Fleming was easily the best thinking captain around for many a year.. (cue Aussie derision). And to average nearly 40 in a side of mediocrity isn't too shameful at all. Moreover he is a genuinely nice bloke as well.

Nah, he's got the talent to be world class. Just needs to remember that he can play off side shots as well, and learn to not be so naive and impetuous.

Classy batsman and good captain. Sorry to see him go.
His ton in Perth in 2001 is the innings I remember best - fine knock.

Re: Fleming retires.
Fleming did a good job, particularly given that he was thrust into the captaincy role pretty early in his career. A pretty fair bat and and a good slipper. Good luck in the future.
